Austria's best summer mountain railways draw a positive interim conclusion

Austria's Best Summer Mountain Lifts are drawing a positive conclusion at the midpoint of the season. A recent flash survey of 39 experts from 84 member companies shows that the first half of the 2026 summer season is rated an average of 4.3 out of 5 points.

54% of the businesses awarded the highest rating. Last year, the comparable figure was 3.7 points. Visitor numbers are also developing clearly positively: 87% of the surveyed businesses recorded an increase compared to the previous year, and not a single business reported a decline.

“Summer 2026 shows how attractive the Austrian mountains are as a destination for excursions and holidays. The high demand meets a diverse range of offers and a special advantage on hot days: The mountains become a summer retreat right on your doorstep,” says Kornel Grundner, spokesperson for the Best Austrian Summer Mountain Railways.

Heat brings visitors to the mountain – special offers make the trip an experience

July gave the mountain summer a strong boost. Following the rainier summer of 2025, it's clear how much weather influences travel decisions. The survey also makes it clear that the heat isn't just a weather factor, but is increasingly becoming a locational advantage for the mountains. 71% of businesses observe a rather or clearly positive influence of the high temperatures on visitor numbers. Only 8% perceive a rather negative effect, and no business reports a clearly negative impact.

The mountains thus become a summer retreat right on people's doorstep – with more pleasant temperatures, forests, shade, and natural places to relax. At the same time, new offerings for children and families, events, popular hiking destinations, and social media trends are generating additional demand. The positive season result is therefore the interplay of favorable weather and attractive mountain experiences.

Mountain railways are preparing for hot summers

The exceptionally warm and dry summer presents businesses with new challenges. These include the strain on technical equipment, raising guest awareness of the forest fire risk, and adjusting operating hours and services.

The overall impact on businesses remains moderate: 87% report little to no impact, while 13% feel rather strongly affected. Feedback indicates that the consequences vary depending on the region and the specific business.

Businesses are reacting proactively: 59% are already planning concrete adjustments or are currently reviewing corresponding investments. The focus is on additional shaded areas, water and refreshment offerings, information for guests and employees, and – depending on the location – adjusted operating hours.

“This year, the heat is acting as an additional boost to demand,” explains Grundner. “At the same time, we see that businesses have to adapt to new conditions – from raising guest awareness and managing the strain on technical equipment to adjusting their offerings and operating hours.”

Summer vacation extended

Member businesses are looking forward to the second half of the season with confidence. September and October offer pleasant temperatures, clear visibility, and the vibrant colors of autumn – ideal conditions for day trips, exercise, and relaxation in the mountains. Around half of the mountain lifts remain in operation until October, with some even running into November, depending on their location.

“The mountain summer doesn’t end with the end of the holidays,” Grundner concludes. “Anyone seeking refreshment, exercise, and unique nature experiences will find plenty of reasons for a trip to the Austrian mountains in the coming weeks.”

The "Best Austrian Summer Mountain Lifts" seal of approval is an initiative of the Austrian Cable Car Association (Austrian Federal Economic Chamber) and stands for quality, cooperation, and sustainable regional development. The seal unites the experts and pioneers of Austrian summer mountain tourism and now boasts 84 members with 101 themed mountains. Only businesses that meet at least 100 quality criteria become one of the Best Austrian Summer Mountain Lifts. Specializing in five thematic areas – Adventure, Family, Panorama & Nature Experience, Culinary Delights, and Art & Culture – members must undergo recertification every three years. A diverse range of experiences is guaranteed – which is why the seal of approval has become an important factor for holidaymakers when choosing a destination.
