Livigno: Mottolino becomes a community benefit company

Mottolino SpA, the Livigno-based company that operates the eponymous ski resort and summer bike park, and was the beating heart of the freeskiing and snowboarding competitions at the recent Olympic Games, has announced its transformation into a Società Benefit (Social Benefit Company). This decision formalizes a path aimed at combining tourism development, environmental sustainability, and a focus on the region.

AI Mode conversation: Mottolino SpA,Mottolino SpA,Mottolino S.p.A. (Mottolino Fun Mountain)Mottolino S.p.A. is the alpine operations company behind Mottolino Fun Mountain, a world-renowned year-round outdoor sports resort located in Livigno, Italy. Originally establishing its first ski lifts in 1958, the company has grown into a major tourism driver in the Italian Alps. It famously hosted the Freestyle Skiing and Snowboarding events for the 2026 Winter Olympic Games.

The transformation takes place during a phase of corporate development and generational change. It formalizes the company's commitment to creating not only economic, but also social and environmental value. The articles of association define four priority areas of action: people, customers, community, and the environment.

“The mountains are not just a tourist product, but an ecosystem of people, region, and relationships,” explained CEO Marco Rocca. He emphasized that the transformation into a Società Benefit represents the formalization of an approach already rooted in the company's history. Ian Rocca, Executive Director, added: “Everyone we come into contact with must feel attentiveness, quality, and respect for the region. For us, becoming a Società Benefit means making this approach even more concrete, transparent, and measurable.”

Internally, Mottolino has initiated a process to strengthen its employee policies. This is achieved through investments in training, organizational listening, and employee well-being via team-building activities, as well as specific tools for monitoring the work environment.

“The path we have established also represents a cultural and organizational evolution,” explains Valentina Rocca, head of the Società Benefit project and director of Mottolino Hut Camanel SpA. “By transforming into a Società Benefit, we have chosen to clearly define goals, responsibilities, and commitments that will guide future company decisions. It is a path that allows us to integrate sustainability, a focus on people, and a long-term vision even more strongly into how we work.”

The company also aims to offer visitors an experience that extends beyond sporting activity by enhancing their connection to the culture and mountain landscape of Livigno. The "Mottolino Vibes" loyalty program also reflects this goal: in its first six months, it donated €5,000 to the local day center for people with disabilities (Centro Diurno Disabili), thus launching a series of initiatives to support the local community.

On an ecological level, the company is working on the sustainable renovation of a mountain hut, designed as a pilot project for alpine architecture with a low environmental impact. The project includes the use of renewable energies and local materials, the reduction of water consumption, and special consideration given to landscape integration.

To complete this process, Mottolino will publish an annual impact report (Relazione di Impatto). The aim is to transparently disclose the social and environmental results achieved and to measure progress in comparison to the commitments made.

“ Cable cars and ski lifts are not just infrastructure serving tourism, but an economic engine that creates jobs, supports local businesses, and contributes to the competitiveness of mountain destinations ,” commented Valeria Ghezzi, President of the National Cable Car Association ANEF. “ It is therefore important that they recognize their social function – as in the case of Mottolino: they help keep communities vibrant, counteract migration, and create opportunities for those who choose to live and work in the mountains. In this way, they become a true focal point for the region. ”
