The World’s Tiniest Champions: Villars Hosts First "Little Rockets" World Championships

While the professional ski circuit winds down for the season, the competition is just heating up in the Swiss Alps—though the athletes are significantly shorter than usual. Since Tuesday, the resort of Villars-sur-Ollon in canton Vaud has been hosting the inaugural "World Championships" for toddlers.

The event, officially titled the "Little Rockets World Championships," features competitors ranging from 30 months to five years old.

Serious Sport for Small Skiers

This isn't just a casual day at ski school; the organizers have designed a program that mirrors the professional world cup circuit, albeit with a bit more focus on fun. The young athletes are participating in:

  • Professional Training Sessions: Acclimatizing the toddlers to the competition environment.

  • Three Major Disciplines: The schedule includes giant slalom, combined slalom, and parallel slalom.

  • World Champion Rankings: A ranking is drawn up after every race, leading to an overall "world champion" title in each age category.

  • A Collaborative Effort

The championships are the result of a partnership between the Swiss Ski School, local ski lift operators, and the resort's hoteliers. Their goal is to maximize the appeal of the resort during the Easter holiday window, a period when slopes typically see fewer crowds and milder temperatures.

"This is the ideal time to ski with young children," organizers noted, citing the moderate crowds and warmer weather as perfect conditions for those just learning to find their edges.

  • Closing Ceremonies and Mini-Discos

  • The event concludes this Saturday with a series of high-energy celebrations. Highlights include:

  • The Prize-Giving Ceremony: Recognizing the new world champions of the toddler circuit.

  • Closing Ceremony: A formal end to the week's festivities.

  • The Mini-Disco: A celebratory dance party to wrap up the inaugural season.

While the "Little Rockets" will soon hang up their racing bibs, the Villars ski area remained open for regular visitors until April 12.
