Milestone at the Schilthorn: The last new cable car in the overall project has opened!
13/April/2026
Between Birg and the Schilthorn, the final aerial cableway in the major SCHILTHORNBAHN 20XX project was put into operation. Around 200 guests attended the midday celebrations on the Schilthorn. Schilthornbahn AG used this special moment to launch its new brand identity.
For three years, intensive construction took place between Stechelberg and the Schilthorn – now the final milestone has been reached: The second and final cable car track between Birg and Schilthorn was officially opened in the presence of around 200 invited guests, including Federal Councillor and Minister of Transport Albert Rösti. Alongside the world's steepest cable car to Mürren, which opened in December 2024, all four Funifor cable cars on the Mürren-Birg-Schilthorn route are now operational. "A new era begins!" exclaimed Johannes Stöckli, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Schilthornbahn AG. "The completion of the last cable car is a historic moment for the Schilthornbahn. That we were able to complete this major project on schedule is anything but a given. Our joy at what we have achieved and the performance of everyone involved is all the greater."
Director Christoph Egger also expressed his delight: “Today is a day of great joy, but also of relief. After years of intensive construction, we are proud to have successfully completed this important project. Johannes Stöckli and I thank everyone involved who contributed to this milestone with their commitment and perseverance.”
New stations with architectural highlights
Not only the cable cars themselves, but also the associated stations in Stechelberg, Mürren, Birg, and on the Schilthorn are new. The bright copper facades of the finger docks are a defining feature, creating a uniform and distinctive style across all stations. Equally impressive is the exposed cable car technology with its magenta wheels. It incorporates elements of the old Gimmelwald cable car station, whose technical upgrades in the 1960s were considered particularly innovative. Inside the stations, ample wood and generous window fronts create a bright atmosphere and unobstructed views of the unique natural surroundings.
Further expansion projects at the stations
While the cable car technology is complete, further expansion projects will be implemented at the stations in the coming months. In Mürren, a new sports shop with an integrated bar will be built on the boarding and disembarking level of the new cable cars by June.
New track, new look
The Schilthorn cableway is using the completion of construction work as an opportunity to launch a new brand identity. At its heart are the "Legendary Moments"—those special experiences that guests can enjoy on the Schilthorn. In close collaboration with the Bern-based agency Stämpfli Kommunikation, the company developed a refined brand foundation. The change is particularly noticeable in the visual appearance: the established brand color magenta is complemented by a warm red tone. The "Schilthorn-Piz Gloria" typeface is now accompanied by a new visual mark—the "Peak," an abstract "S" in the shape of a mountain. The new typeface also reflects the rugged topography of the Schilthorn region. The imagery is inspired by the dynamic and often rapidly changing weather conditions.
The new design is now being gradually implemented in everyday use. The rebranding will be completed with the introduction of the new staff uniforms at the start of the 2026/27 winter season.
