Swiss Landmark to Get CHF 34 Million Makeover: Stanserhorn Revolving Restaurant to be Replaced
12/April/2026
The iconic "Rondorama" revolving restaurant atop Mount Stanserhorn is set to be demolished and replaced by a modern, three-storey complex. The Stanserhorn Bahn company unveiled the CHF 34 million project today, marking a significant transition for one of Central Switzerland’s most popular alpine destinations.
The new building, designed by the Graubünden-based architectural firm Weitschies Krähenbühl, is scheduled for construction between 2028 and 2030.
Project Detail Information
Total Investment CHF 34 Million
Architect Weitschies Krähenbühl
Construction Period 2028 – 2030
Summit Elevation 1,898 Metres
Max Transit Capacity 234 people / hour
Standing at 1,898 metres above sea level, the current restaurant has been a staple of the peak since it opened in 2001. However, officials stated that the structure—originally built in just four months for CHF 4.5 million—can no longer keep up with modern hospitality standards or the growing number of visitors.
The replacement structure aims to harmonize with the rugged alpine environment using a contemporary wood and glass façade. The three-storey design will significantly expand the site's capabilities:
Dining: A 120-seat self-service restaurant and a 60-seat table-service restaurant.
Events: Dedicated banquet space for up to 150 guests and specialized rooms for seminars.
Views: Two new panoramic terraces designed to offer unobstructed views of the surrounding Swiss Alps and ten lakes.
The "CabriO" Effect
The push for a more robust facility is largely attributed to the success of the CabriO double-decker cable car, the world's first open-top aerial tramway. Since its introduction, the influx of tourists seeking the "wind-in-the-hair" experience has stretched the current restaurant’s capacity to its limit.
Despite the upgrade, the promoters are taking a firm stance against mass tourism.
“The Stanserhorn is not intended to become a destination for mass tourism,” a spokesperson for Stanserhorn Bahn emphasized.
To maintain the mountain's exclusive and serene atmosphere, the capacity of the cable car will remain strictly limited to 234 people per hour.
While the vision for the summit is clear, a few hurdles remain. Financing arrangements for the multi-million franc project have not yet been finalized. However, the company is moving forward with the 2028–2030 timeline.
Visitor Note: For those planning a trip during the construction phase, the summit will remain accessible to the public, though visitors should expect reduced capacity and some service limitations as the new landmark takes shape.
