Von Trapp Family Mini Museum opens at the Zwölferhorn in St. Gilgen.

The new “Von Trapp Family Mini Museum” has opened at the Zwölferhorn in St. Gilgen. Kristina von Trapp, granddaughter of the famous couple Maria and Georg von Trapp, travelled to the opening together with her daughter Annie.

Also present were Mario Stedile-Foradori, managing partner of the Zwölferhorn cable car company; Leo Bauernberger, managing director of SalzburgerLand Tourism; Dr. Erich Egger, official spokesperson for the Salzburg cable car industry; Mayor Otto Kloiber; and numerous representatives of the regional tourism sector. The event was musically accompanied by the Tanzlmusi St. Gilgen band, while the Hackl family from the "Das Zwölfer" panorama restaurant treated the guests to culinary delights.

With the new mini-museum on the Zwölferhorn mountain, a special place has been created that tells the true story of the von Trapp family. This is the family whose story inspired the world-famous film "The Sound of Music." The Zwölferhorn and the view of St. Gilgen are featured in the film's opening credits, creating an authentic connection between the region and the von Trapp family's history.

The idea for the museum arose from the desire to keep the family's story alive not only in Vermont but also in Salzburg. Together with the von Trapp family, an existing building was transformed into a lovingly designed mini-museum. Visitors immerse themselves in the family's history through detailed miniatures, numerous photographs, background information, and original music performed by the Trapp Family Singers. Personal insights from Kristina von Trapp also create a special connection to the present day, demonstrating how the family's legacy continues to this day at the Von Trapp Family Lodge & Resort in Vermont.

The museum focuses not only on the historical events surrounding the von Trapp family, but also on values such as solidarity, tradition, a connection to nature, and hospitality. In this way, the museum builds a unique bridge between the Salzburg region and Vermont – two places that remain closely linked to the family's history.

The “Von Trapp Family Mini Museum” is open daily, corresponding to the opening hours of the Zwölferhorn cable car, and can be visited free of charge from May 22, 2026. Even on the approximately ten-minute walk from the mountain station to the museum, guests are playfully introduced to the museum visit with a quiz along the way.
