Tyrolean Zugspitze Railway Celebrates Century of Alpine Innovation
07/June/2026
The Tyrolean Zugspitze cable car in Ehrwald will mark its 100th anniversary in 2026; the summit’s interactive museum at 2,962 m has been fully redesigned by glaciologist and astrophotographer Norbert Span and reopens for the summer season with new historical exhibits and multimedia installations.
The Tiroler Zugspitzbahn, which opened in 1926 and is celebrated as Tyrol’s first cable car, will celebrate its 100th anniversary in 2026. To coincide with the summer season, the mountain‑station museum “Faszination Zugspitze” has been comprehensively redesigned by glaciologist and astrophotographer Norbert Span, who has reimagined the 2005 museum with interactive stations, large‑format graphics and state‑of‑the‑art media technology.
A Modern Museum at 2,962 Meters
Located at the summit station at 2,962 meters, the redesigned museum aims to make a century of cable‑car history tangible for visitors of all ages. The project blends original historical artifacts—including an original 1978 cabin (No. 5)—with multimedia installations that animate the railway’s development from its pioneering beginnings to today’s modern panoramic cabins. Curator Norbert Span says the exhibition links tradition, innovation and education to inspire younger generations about technological progress and regional identity.
Exhibition Highlights
The museum’s new layout features several immersive elements designed for hands‑on engagement: a walk‑in kaleidoscope that reflects Zugspitze impressions in an oversized sphere; a 3‑D model of the Zugspitze region activated by an interactive journey; and a digital head‑up display that overlays an animated 1978 cable‑car journey onto the real landscape. A dedicated cinema screens new films about the railway’s construction, while a timeline wall and scale models trace the five generations of cable‑car cabins over the last century. The final gallery focuses on weather and climate, with an interactive relief map that compares extreme conditions on the Zugspitze to other Alpine peaks.
Voices from Tyrol’s Tourism Community
Regional officials and railway management framed the redesign as both a cultural milestone and a tourism investment. Mario Gerber, Regional Minister for Economic Affairs, Digitalization and Tourism, praised the museum for making the railway’s history accessible and for supporting the local tourism economy. Franz Dengg, Managing Director of the Tiroler Zugspitzbahn, highlighted the museum’s striking imagery and educational value, while Theo Zoller, Chairman of the TVB Tiroler Zugspitz Arena, emphasized ongoing infrastructure investments, including a technical and visual overhaul of the railway’s panoramic cabins by Swiss manufacturer CWA.
Anniversary Program and Visitor Incentives
To mark the centenary, the Tiroler Zugspitzbahn is running a “100 Years – 100 Prizes” campaign from May 14 to November 8, 2026, where visitors collect stamps during their trip for entry into a prize draw that includes hotel stays and summit‑restaurant vouchers. The anniversary program also features commemorative publications, limited‑edition souvenirs and special events throughout the summer season.
For visitors and historians alike, the redesigned Faszination Zugspitze offers a compact but immersive time capsule that ties a century of alpine engineering to contemporary concerns about climate, technology and regional identity.
