MILITARY HELICOPTERS AIRLIFT TOURISTS STRANDED BY MUDSLIDES IN AUSTRIA’S KAUNERTAL VALLEY

A fleet of military and police helicopters completed a major rescue operation in Tyrol on Monday, June 29, airlifting more than 200 tourists and workers who became trapped after violent alpine storms triggered a series of massive mudslides.

The disaster occurred on Sunday afternoon when a severe thunderstorm bringing heavy rain and hail struck the Feichten area of the Kaunertal valley. The intense weather destabilized the steep slopes above the iconic Kaunertal Glacier Road, triggering three separate landslides—known locally as "Muren" events—that washed away a 50-meter section of the roadway and completely knocked out the regional power supply.

Visitors Trapped in Mountain Shelters

Because the narrow glacier road serves as the sole access route to the high-alpine ski area, the debris flows completely cut off the upper valley, stranding roughly 200 day visitors, excursion guests, and hospitality workers.

With outbound vehicle travel impossible, the stranded guests were forced to spend Sunday night in local emergency accommodations, including valley restaurants and high-altitude mountain huts, while rescue teams waited for daylight to evaluate flight safety. While a few individuals were flown out on Sunday afternoon for urgent medical reasons, local authorities confirmed that no injuries or fatalities resulted directly from the mudslides.

Austrian Armed Forces Launch Rescue Operation

Following a formal request for assistance from Tyrol’s State Emergency Warning Center on Sunday afternoon, the Austrian Armed Forces mobilized an emergency evacuation mission.

The airlift began early Monday morning at 8:00 AM. The military deployed specialized aircraft to the valley, including an AB212 helicopter and an AW169 "Lion," working alongside police helicopters to ferry the stranded tourists to safety. Ground crews also dispatched a mobile refueling truck directly to the Kaunertal area to keep the helicopters operating continuously through the morning.

"When people are in distress, every minute counts," Austrian Defense Minister Klaudia Tanner said in a statement regarding the mobilization. "I am very grateful to our soldiers for doing everything they can to bring people to safety, even under difficult weather conditions."

Deteriorating Weather Threats Loom Over Tyrol

The severe weather follows a dramatic shift in Alpine climate patterns, as a volatile cold front collided with a preceding regional heatwave to trigger sudden atmospheric instability.

The military weather center has warned that the risk to the region remains high. Saturated ground conditions continue to pose an ongoing threat for secondary slides, and forecasters note that rapidly developing thunderstorms—which are difficult to reliably predict in the narrow valley corridors—could continue through the week. Heavy heavy-duty equipment has been deployed to the glacier road as cleanup crews begin the arduous task of removing the massive piles of mud and rock.
