Lake Resia Upgrade: Belpiano to Debut New Piz Schöneben Gondola for 2026/27 Winter
06/June/2026
The Belpiano - Schöneben ski area on Lake Resia is entering the next phase of its major modernization strategy. Work is now underway to replace the resort's main artery, the Piz–Schöneben gondola lift, with a state-of-the-art facility set to debut for the start of the 2026/2027 ski season.
This development marks the most significant infrastructure project at the resort since the crucial connection work in 2018/2019, which physically unified the Belpiano and Malga San Valentino ski areas. The Piz-Schöneben lift serves as the primary "landing stage" and access point for thousands of skiers entering the unified resort.
Leitner Design Allows for Seamless Transition
The new gondola lift is designed by the industry leader Leitner. To minimize disruption for year-round tourism, the new facility is being constructed on a path slightly off-track from the old lift.
This strategic engineering choice allows the existing Piz-Schöneben lift to remain fully operational through the upcoming summer 2026 season while construction progresses on the adjacent line.
Enhanced Amenities and Accessibility
When the new lift opens next winter, skiers will be welcomed by a completely redesigned, barrier-free valley station. This modern building is set to house the central ticket office, extensive ski storage, and administrative offices, streamlining the arrival process.
The upgrades extend to the mountain station as well, which will expand its footprint to include a new first aid station, ski school headquarters, and a dedicated "baby area" for families.
Summer 2026 Operational Schedule
During the construction phase, the Belpiano-Schöneben area will maintain its summer offerings. The existing Piz-Schöneben lift is scheduled to be open to the public from May 29th to August 16th, 2026.
Following August 16th, that lift will close to prepare for the final stages of the new facility's connection. However, visitors will still have mountain access via the Haideralmbahn, which will operate until October 11th.
