Haute‑Savoie Mont‑Blanc in summer: lakes, peaks and a season of big returns

Framed by crystal-clear lakes, soaring Alpine peaks, and the iconic Mont-Blanc—the highest summit in Western Europe—Haute-Savoie offers an inspiring blend of nature, adventure, culture, and gastronomy. As spring turns to summer, the region reveals spectacular landscapes shaped by mountains and water. Hiking trails emerge through unspoilt scenery, cyclists tackle legendary climbs, and visitors gather around the shores of the region’s famous lakes.

Beyond its natural beauty, Haute-Savoie Mont-Blanc is defined by its rich culture and welcoming way of life. Authentic villages, local markets, festivals, and world-class sporting events bring the area to life throughout the summer season. For travellers seeking the ultimate European escape, the region is rolling out an array of major re-openings, new experiences, and luxury accommodations.

What’s New for the Season

Sustainable High-Mountain Access

Following three years of construction, France’s highest cog railway is making a triumphant return. The Tramway du Mont Blanc re-opens with a new extension taking passengers to the Nid d’Aigle refuge at 2,394 metres—the traditional starting point for ascents of Mont Blanc. As well as offering one of the most scenic journeys in the Alps, the Tramway plays an increasingly important role in promoting sustainable mobility and preserving Alpine rail heritage.

Cultural Rebirth in Chamonix

Following a complete refurbishment, the Mont-Blanc Museum in Chamonix-Mont-Blanc (previously known as the Musée Alpin) will reopen in July. Dedicated to the relationship between people and the mountains, the museum will feature immersive exhibitions exploring mountaineering, Alpine history, and landscape heritage.

Wild West Meets the Alps

For an unexpected twist on Alpine exploration, the Flo Little Ranch in Saint-Jean-de-Sixt offers visitors the chance to experience the spirit of the American West. Founded by barrel racing champion Florence Pessey, the ranch offers trail rides and Western-style riding lessons for all abilities amidst the stunning Aravis scenery.

Paws and Peaks

The Haut-Giffre valley is expanding its dog-friendly tourism offer after being awarded the French “Toutourisme” label. Visitors can now enjoy unique experiences alongside Nordic dogs, including doga (yoga with dogs) and cani-balades (guided dog walks).

A Rising Constellation of Gastronomy & Luxury

With 21 Michelin-starred restaurants, Haute-Savoie continues to establish itself as one of France’s leading gastronomic destinations. Two new restaurants join the prestigious list: La Table d’Armante in Saint-Nicolas-de-Véroce, led by Chef Thomas Vonderscher, and Chalet Flachaire in Abondance, headed by Chef Thomas Flachaire.

Meanwhile, on the shores of Lake Annecy, the iconic Auberge du Père Bise has unveiled an extensive redesign led by architect Antoine Ricardou. Ten years after taking over the property, Jean and Magali Sulpice have transformed the reception areas, dining rooms, and bar into a contemporary lakeside retreat inspired by the spirit of a traditional inn.

The region is also seeing a growing trend towards luxury, nature-based accommodations that seamlessly combine sustainability, wellbeing, and immersive experiences:

Micro Palaces: Located at the Secret Gardens in Vaulx, these elevated, eco-designed lodgings offer premium comfort in a serene setting.

Cabanes du Salève: Situated in Collonges-sous-Salève, these properties combine rustic mountain cabin living with private outdoor spas overlooking pristine natural surroundings.

Le Tremplin: This iconic hotel at the foot of the Pléney slopes in Morzine is entering a new era under the ownership of the British Timpson family, unveiling 12 new independent luxury suites alongside its reopened restaurant, bar, and terrace.

The Ultimate Outdoor Playground

Haute-Savoie Mont-Blanc remains one of Europe’s premier destinations for world-class cycling, hiking, and trail running.

For Hikers and Cyclists

Experienced hikers can tackle the dramatic Pas du Roc trail in the Fillière valley near Annecy, featuring stairways carved directly into the rock face and panoramic views over cliffs and valleys.

For cyclists, the ViaRhôna cycling route continues to develop with new greenway sections between Sciez and Excenevex, alongside redesigned routes around the Monts du Genevois and Thonon-les-Bains. Additionally, Samoëns will transform into a cycling hub from 5–7 June, hosting the inaugural Baroudeurs des Alpes event featuring mountain-bike challenges and Gran Fondo road cycling events.
