Escape the Heat: Discover Méribel, the Ultimate Alpine Coolcation

With many people looking to escape the heat this summer,  consider Méribel as the ultimate Alpine "coolcation" destination. The resort's new Explorer Pass gives families access to more than 30 activities and experiences, making it an ideal base for an active mountain holiday.

As temperatures across the UK reached 35.7°C this week – the hottest June day ever recorded in Britain – many travellers are looking beyond traditional beach holidays in search of cooler summer escapes. One destination perfectly placed to meet the growing demand for "coolcations" is Méribel in the French Alps, where summer temperatures typically remain a comfortable 18–23°C.

Nestled in the heart of the Three Valleys at 1,450m, Méribel offers visitors the opportunity to swap crowded beaches and sweltering cities for mountain trails, alpine lakes and wide-open landscapes. While much of Europe bakes in soaring temperatures, the resort’s higher altitude provides a refreshing alternative, making it an ideal destination for families, couples and outdoor enthusiasts looking to swap crowded beaches and sweltering cities for alpine meadows, mountain lakes and fresh mountain air.

New Explorer Pass Launches for Summer 2026

New for summer 2026, Méribel's Explorer Pass offers exceptional value for families, providing access to more than 30 activities and experiences across the resort. Available from 4 July to 29 August 2026, the pass includes unlimited pedestrian lift access throughout the Méribel Valley, swimming pool and ice rink entry, family entertainment, guided activities and a range of discounts with local partners. Younger visitors can enjoy pony rides, mini-farm experiences, trampolines, inflatable castles and tubing, ensuring there's something to keep every member of the family entertained. The Explorer Pass costs £60 for three days or £86 for six days.

Swap Heatwaves for Hiking Trails

When the snow melts, Méribel transforms into an alpine playground, where wildflower-filled meadows and mountain lakes replace ski pistes. Hikers can use the resort's extensive lift network to effortlessly access panoramic trails, mountain lakes and spectacular viewpoints, opening up the mountains to all abilities. Meanwhile, cyclists can explore more than 300km of mountain bike and e-bike routes across the Three Valleys, from gentle scenic rides through forests and valleys to thrilling downhill descents. Whether on two feet or two wheels, it's one of the best ways to experience the Alps in summer.

Outdoor Adventures in the Mountains

One of Méribel's greatest luxuries is space. Surrounded by forests, peaks and protected natural landscapes, the resort offers countless ways to reconnect with nature. Enjoy a peaceful stroll around Lake Tueda, cast a line while fishing in pristine mountain waters or tee off at one of Europe's highest golf courses, framed by breathtaking Alpine scenery. The cooler mountain climate allows visitors to stay active throughout the day, making Méribel an appealing alternative to destinations where summer temperatures often limit outdoor activities.

Wellness Above the Clouds

For those seeking a slower pace, Méribel's mountain setting provides the perfect backdrop for relaxation. Start the day with outdoor yoga overlooking the peaks, unwind in a mountain-view hot tub or book a restorative treatment at Hôtel Mont Vallon, where guests can enjoy an indoor pool, sauna and hammam after a day on the trails. With fresh alpine air, spectacular scenery and a slower pace of life, Méribel makes it easy to switch off and recharge.
