The Grossglockner cable cars are under new management as real estate investors Thomas Seitlinger and Johannes Böck have acquired full sole ownership of the mountain railway system.
Heiligenblut Bergbahnen Beteiligungs-GmbH (HBB), owned by Seitlinger and Böck, acquired all shares from the previous majority owners, GBT-Holding, which is owned by the Schmidl and Schröcksnadel families. HBB has been a shareholder in the company since 2024.
According to a press release, the new owners intend to launch new initiatives in collaboration with local entrepreneurs and ensure the long-term stability of the Grossglockner Bergbahnen.
Seitlinger praised the region in a press statement, noting that Heiligenblut boasts significant tourist appeal, unique landscape features, and committed local partners. Working with the region, Seitlinger stated the goal is to consistently continue the positive development of recent years while generating new momentum.
Christian Prinz, holding company spokesman for GBT-Holding, discussed the rationale behind the sale to Seitlinger, citing the buyers’ existing presence in the area.
"The reason for the sale is that both new owners already have real estate investments in the hotel and tourism sectors in Heiligenblut and can therefore simply leverage great synergies," Prinz said regarding the sale to Seitlinger. He added that the Schmidl and Schröcksnadel families will "continue to act as a supportive partner, for example regarding marketing, ticketing networks, etc., and will remain available in this regard."
The primary immediate goal for Seitlinger and Böck is to bring tourist occupancy rates in the town back to pre-pandemic levels.
Seitlinger stated that many local businesses have already pledged to contribute to the future financing of the Grossglockner cable cars. Furthermore, day tourism will be boosted through new mobility options servicing the regions of Klagenfurt, Villach, and Spittal.
