Stuttgart to further investigate cable car connection from Pragsattel to the Robert Bosch Hospital,

The Stuttgart Committee for Urban Development and Technology has decided to further investigate the cable car connection from Pragsattel to the Robert Bosch Hospital, including possible extensions. The pilot route from Vaihingen to the Eiermann area will not be pursued further due to its negative cost-benefit ratio.

The cable car connection between Pragsattel and the Robert Bosch Hospital will be examined in detail. This was decided by the Stuttgart Committee for Urban Development and Technology at its meeting on June 30th. The basis for this is the now-completed feasibility study on cable cars as part of Stuttgart's public transport system.

Further investigations will also include possible extensions to Burgholzhof, to the future S-Bahn station Rosenstein and to Stuttgart-East.

Over the past few years, the feasibility study has examined the conditions under which cable cars can meaningfully complement public transport in Stuttgart. Various routes within the city were considered, along with questions regarding technology, economic viability, environmental impact, and integration into the existing transport network. The results show that cable cars are particularly advantageous where significant differences in elevation need to be overcome or where the existing transport infrastructure is reaching its limits. They require relatively little space and can directly cross obstacles such as busy roads or valleys.

No cable car between Vaihingen train station and the Eiermann area

However, the results for the pilot route between Vaihingen train station and the Eiermann site, which has been examined in detail so far, are negative. Despite various optimization approaches, a positive cost-benefit ratio could not be achieved. Therefore, this route will not be pursued further. At the same time, the study provides the city with important insights for a sound, expert evaluation of other potential cable car connections.

The Mayor of Stuttgart, Dr. Frank Nopper, takes the following position on the matter: “Stuttgart has cable car potential. With its topography and its 350-meter difference in altitude, Stuttgart is practically predestined for a cable car. Cable cars can be an efficient and environmentally friendly mode of transport as part of the public transport system. However, we should concentrate on cable car projects where the cost-benefit ratio is positive. Therefore, we should not pursue the cable car project in Stuttgart-Vaihingen to the Eiermann Campus any further, but we should examine the feasibility of the cable car project proposed by the Robert Bosch Hospital from Pragsattel to the Robert Bosch Hospital.”
