Obergurgl: New reservoir under construction

Construction of the new reservoir is already in full swing this summer. But what is being created here is far more than just a water reservoir – it is an infrastructure that combines innovation, economic efficiency and responsible construction, actively shaping the tourism of tomorrow.

The reservoir ensures that water is stored under optimal conditions and is available at all times during snowmaking. This reduces water extraction from the streams during the sensitive winter months and simultaneously creates a reliable basis for high-quality and efficient snow production.

A particular focus is on the further development of our snowmaking technology. The reservoir will serve as a test and development site under real-world conditions. Innovative snowmaking systems can be tested and optimized here under alpine conditions – with the clear goal of achieving the highest possible snow quality with the lowest possible energy consumption.

The concept is also technically impressive: thanks to the natural difference in elevation, the reservoir is located above the pumps. This allows for optimal use of water pressure and reduces motor power. At the same time, the water intakes are also at a higher level, eliminating the need for energy-intensive pumping. This saves energy, lowers operating costs, and increases the efficiency of the entire snowmaking system.

From the outset, the project is accompanied by extensive ecological compensation measures. New habitats for amphibians, additional ponds, and the reforestation of Swiss stone pines contribute to the long-term preservation of alpine nature and the responsible integration of infrastructure into the landscape.

The reservoir will be completed as early as autumn 2026 and will make a significant contribution to efficient snowmaking for the first time in the winter of 2026/27. As a new recreational area amidst the alpine landscape, the reservoir will finally be available to visitors as a tranquil oasis and attractive summer attraction from summer 2027 onwards.
