Tyrol Showcases Multi-generational holidays

Multi-generational holidays are trending – and for good reason. When grandparents, parents, and children travel together, the holiday becomes a conscious meeting point in the often hectic everyday life. Instead of scattered appointments, one thing counts above all: time together. Tyrol offers ideal conditions for this – with short distances, a well-developed infrastructure, and diverse nature experiences accessible to all age groups.

A multigenerational holiday benefits everyone equally: children experience quality time with their parents and grandparents, parents gain some free time within their well-established routine, and grandparents enjoy actively participating in family life. At the same time, new forms of travel are emerging – from classic three-generation trips to "skip-gen" holidays, where grandparents travel alone with their grandchildren.

Tyrol – Holidays for all generations

Tyrol's family-friendly regions offer a wide range of activities – from leisurely to active. A flexible daily schedule has proven successful: a shared experience in the morning, individual activities in the afternoon, and a reunion at dinner.

A particular advantage: Most Tyrolean regions offer their guests so-called summer cards. These guest cards bundle access to numerous attractions – from mountain lifts and museums to swimming pools – in addition to free use of public transport, enabling cost-effective and straightforward use of the regional infrastructure. Depending on the region, the cards are either free or available for a small fee, which is usually quickly offset by the included benefits. For families, this means that many experiences are covered by a single card – simple and easy to plan. Some examples:

  • Alpbachtal Card – free from the first overnight stay: unlimited use of the summer mountain lifts, diverse family program, free use of public transport, bathing lakes and numerous museums.

  • East Tyrol Card – an add-on card for three, five, or seven days: seven mountain lifts, three swimming pools, and numerous cultural and nature-based activities. Cost in 2026: between €69.00 and €90.00 for adults, between €37.00 and €45.00 for children aged 6 and over.

  • Achensee Adventure Card – includes, among other things, mountain railways, boat trips on Lake Achensee, and admission to selected attractions, including a visit to Swarovski Crystal Worlds in Wattens. Cost in 2026: €102.00 for adults, €51.00 for children (born between 2011 and 2019).

  • Tannheimer Tal Guest Card – free from one overnight stay: use of public transport included; when staying in participating establishments, free use of the mountain railways as well as numerous discounts on leisure activities such as fishing, climbing or tennis.

  • Ötztal Summer Card – available free of charge at over 400 partner businesses, otherwise for purchase: free use of the summer mountain lifts and – depending on the period – numerous excursion destinations such as AREA 47 or AQUA DOME included.

Experience the mountains – thanks to the Tyrolean summer mountain lifts

Tyrol's summer mountain lifts make the alpine landscape accessible to everyone – regardless of fitness level or age. In just a few minutes, they whisk guests from the valley floor to scenic heights where hiking trails, adventure parks, and panoramic viewpoints await. These lifts are especially ideal for families with grandparents: while some guests enjoy a leisurely stroll or take in the views, children can explore nature on playgrounds or adventure trails. Some of the most popular mountain experiences for families include:

Adventure worlds on the mountain with playgrounds and themed trails, such as the Serlespark in the Stubai Valley, the Zirbenpark Hochzeiger in the Pitztal Valley or the Hög Adventure Park in Serfaus-Fiss-Ladis

Promising summit destinations with panoramic trails such as the Buchensteinwand in the Pillersee valley or the Nordkette in Innsbruck

Hikes with cable car support, such as the Brandstadl-Hartkaiser panoramic trail or a panoramic hike at Spieljoch in Hochfügen – perfect for all fitness levels

This way, a trip to the mountains becomes a relaxing nature experience even for small children or less mobile grandparents.

Nature experiences without significant elevation gain

Not every outing has to involve a high-altitude climb. Tyrol offers numerous nature experiences for all generations, which are possible even without long or challenging hikes. Panoramic and themed trails, which combine knowledge about nature and culture with physical activity, are particularly popular. Gorges and canyons are also ideal destinations on hot summer days – waterfalls and shady paths provide welcome refreshment. Typical activities for multi-generational families include:

  • Themed trails such as the NaturKraftUmbalfälle waterfalls in East Tyrol or the Moor & More Rocky Trail at the Wilder Kaiser

  • Gorges and canyons on hot days: Kaiserklamm in Brandenberg, Leutascher Geisterklamm or Zammer Lochputz (including legends and a demonstration power plant)

  • Family-friendly alpine hikes with a stop for refreshments

  • Valley cycle paths like the Inn cycle path – also easily doable with an e-bike, return journey as desired by train or bus

Cooling off in the water

Especially in summer, a dip in cool water is part of the perfect holiday day for many families. Tyrol offers numerous options : from hotel pools and outdoor swimming pools to idyllic natural bathing lakes. Lakes with swimming areas, boat rentals, or play areas for children offer variety for the whole family. While some swim or paddle, others simply enjoy the view of the surrounding mountain landscape.

Animal Encounters

A highlight for many children – and often for adults too – is encountering animals. Zoos, farms, and adventure pastures offer the opportunity to experience native animals up close. Such excursions combine entertainment with experiencing nature and often create the most cherished holiday memories, especially for the youngest family members.

Learning & discovering together

Cultural excursions offer a wonderful opportunity for multigenerational holidays to discover new things together and experience history firsthand. This is particularly evident in Tyrol – for example, at Ambras Castle in Innsbruck with its art and curiosity cabinet and expansive park; in the historic old town of Hall in Tyrol, including the Hall Mint, where visitors can even mint their own coin; or during a stroll through Rattenberg, Austria's smallest town, with its traditional glassblowing art. Swarovski Crystal Worlds in Wattens also combines art with a large garden and play area. At the Museum of Tyrolean Farmhouses, life in bygone eras becomes tangible – with interactive exhibits and an escape room for solving puzzles together across generations.

Accommodation with room for the whole family

For multigenerational trips, the choice of accommodation plays a crucial role. Houses with ample space, separate retreats, and communal areas are particularly sought after. In Tyrol, families will find a wide range of options – from family hotels and holiday apartments to farmhouses and chalets. Selected examples:

  • The Almfamilyhotel Scherer in East Tyrol is specifically aimed at families with grandparents and offers extensive childcare as well as activities for all generations.

  • The Alpegg Chalets in the Pillersee Valley offer plenty of privacy and space for larger family groups.

  • The Pitzis children's hotel in the Pitztal valley specializes in holidays with multiple generations and offers age-appropriate programs for children and adults.

  • The Innerkienzerhof near Matrei in East Tyrol offers sustainable holidays on an organic farm in a quiet location.

  • The Rosenhof in Nauders combines farm experience with comfort – including pony rides, animal feedings and regional cuisine.

  • The Buchau family resort on Lake Achensee scores as a family hotel with its location directly on the lake, an extensive activity program and a spacious wellness and spa area.

  • The Ascherhof in Thiersee is an insider tip for stylish living with a family atmosphere and regional cuisine.
