Rax cable car – Autumn event series in the anniversary year
04/September/2026
The final stretch of the anniversary year: For 100 years, the Rax cable car in the Vienna Alps in Lower Austria has connected the valley with the Rax plateau, making the mountain easily accessible for visitors. Around 200,000 people use this convenient ascent every year. Austria's first passenger cable car safely covers an altitude difference of approximately 1,000 meters in just under eight minutes. The family-friendly hiking and recreation area can be reached from Vienna in about an hour by car or public transport. “The Rax remains a place of new beginnings, and the Rax cable car will continue to symbolize the courage to forge new paths and the deep connection between humankind and nature for the next 100 years. We have already been able to offer our guests several anniversary highlights, including the public open day, new combination tickets, and moonlight rides. Now, in autumn, the hiking season begins – in addition to extensive tours, numerous events are attracting visitors to the Rax plateau,” emphasizes Bernd Scharfegger , operator of the Rax cable car and managing director of Scharfegger's Raxalpen Resort. The
Rax Run, cultural hikes, and culinary delights on the mountain
will kick off the autumn season. The Rax Run , organized jointly with the WSV Payerbach ski club, will take place on September 5, 2026 ( start: 10:00 a.m. ). Participants can again choose from the familiar Classic, Plateau, and Extreme routes. The Classic route covers 8.8 kilometers and 1,100 meters of elevation gain, leading from the valley station via the Knappenhof and the Törl to the mountain station. The Plateau Run starts at the mountain station, continues via the Ottohaus, the Jakobskogel, and the Preinerwandkreuz to the Seehütte, and returns via the Seeweg – a total of 10.1 kilometers with 340 meters of elevation gain. The Extreme route combines both routes, covering 15.5 kilometers with 1,400 meters of elevation gain. Online registration is available at www.wsv-payerbach.at/raxlauf . The entry fee is €30 for the Classic route and €35 for both the Plateau and Extreme runs.
For a conscious escape from everyday life, the Cranio-Sacral Day on September 20th at the Ottohaus offers a unique opportunity. Following a hike across the Rax plateau, participants will enjoy a 45-minute Cranio-Sacral treatment – a soothing way to relax body and mind. Cost: €60 per person. On September 25th, a roughly six-hour " Cultural Hike with Luxury Chamois " led by Irene Beckmann will explore the works of Freud and Frankl. The approximately eleven-kilometer tour combines psychological and historical perspectives with the alpine landscape. A picnic at the Preinerwand Cross and a relaxing end to the day at the Raxalm mountain inn will round off the experience. Cost: €59 per person. Registration at: www.luxusgaemsen.at
On September 26th, the focus of " In Harmony with Nature " is on the connection between hiking, voice, and nature. Voice coach Silvana Mock and nature guide Astrid Grohmann invite you to discover the Rax region through singing, hiking, and targeted breathing and vocal exercises.
The event also caters to the physical well-being of the participants during the golden autumn: A sunrise breakfast on September 27th at the Raxalm mountain inn offers a delicious start to the day with a unique panoramic view. The Rax cable car will transport guests to the Rax plateau starting at 7:00 a.m. There, a breakfast buffet, Prosecco on the panoramic terrace, Silva Verjus, and live music with the trio Jenny Bell, LiesiOnSax, and Wolfgang Hammer await. Tickets are available from €89.00 for adults.
Writing Workshop and Moonlight Swing:
The Rax Plateau offers a high plateau of approximately 34 km² with diverse hiking opportunities and viewpoints. The "Törl" below the Ottohaus is particularly popular, described by many visitors as a portal to another world. The Höllental Viewpoint offers an impressive view into the Höllental valley – a natural balcony reachable from the cable car's mountain station in about 40 minutes. A writing weekend with Ilona Matusch (October 2-4) provides space for creativity, combining hiking, nature experiences, and creative writing. A highlight of the autumn program is the ninth annual Moonlight Swing on the mountain (October 16). Under the motto "The Greatest Hits from 100 Years," the Babenberger Big Band Mödling "B4" will provide swing, all-time hits, and pop music at the Raxalm mountain inn. Among the performers are Bernd J. Scharfegger, Silvana Mock, and special guest Lucky Dean Luciano. Cost: €89.00 per person, tickets available at events.raxalpe.com.
