Canton of Glarus ensures liquidity for Braunwald funicular railway AG
01/September/2026
The cantonal government is ensuring the solvency of Braunwald Funicular Railway AG. This is due to significant budget deviations and an impending liquidity shortage. With phased financial assistance, the canton is guaranteeing the continued operation of the funicular and thus the accessibility of Braunwald.
Braunwald Funicular Railway AG is facing financial difficulties. Due to significant losses since 2023 and the forecast for the current year, the company is threatened with a liquidity shortage. To ensure the continued operation of the funicular between Linthal and Braunwald, the canton is providing short-term financial assistance. Based on current information, an additional CHF 2.8 million (in addition to existing shareholder loans) is needed to secure liquidity until mid-2027.
The canton is fulfilling its legal obligation to commission
public transport services. As a first step, the cantonal government is securing short-term liquidity with a financial aid of 600,000 Swiss francs, in accordance with its legally mandated obligation to commission public transport services. Further necessary funds will be released in stages and as needed. This measure is intended to ensure the uninterrupted operation of public transport to Braunwald.
Comprehensive analysis and remediation initiated.
In addition to securing short-term liquidity, the government council, in its supervisory capacity, has tasked the board of directors with conducting an in-depth analysis and remediation of the causes of the financial situation. At the same time, the ownership strategy is being reviewed. The aim is to further strengthen the management and control of the company and to place the business on a stable financial footing in the long term.
