One Month to Go: Fresh Snow Marks the Countdown to Winter in Val d’Isère

With a month to go until Val d'Isère opens for the 2026/27 ski season on 28th November, the countdown to winter is on in the French Alps.

Winter is beginning to transform the mountains in Val d’Isère, following several snowfalls over the past weeks. With 119cm currently recorded at 3,000m, the latest views from Bellevarde and Crête des Leissières offer an early glimpse of the season ahead. Keen skiers can keep an eye on the mountain via the resort’s live webcams and check the latest conditions on the snow report.

Beyond the snow, there is plenty new to look forward to in Val d’Isère this winter. In the village, La Folie Douce will open La Folie Coffee, its first village venue, in the historic Maison Chevallot bakery. Up on the mountain, Val d’Isère welcomes its first electric snow groomer, cutting CO₂ emissions by 93% compared with HVO fuel. A strengthened approach to slope safety will also be led by the newly established Pompons Jaunes association and its more than 400 ambassadors.

Getting to the mountains is becoming easier by rail too, with the Travelski Night Express expanding to connect Amsterdam, Rotterdam, Antwerp and Brussels with Moûtiers, Aime and Bourg-Saint-Maurice.

France’s iconic Alpine destination Val d’Isère is continuing to strengthen its position as one of Europe’s premier mountain resorts, combining major investments in guest experience, environmental initiatives and family-friendly attractions while maintaining the authentic village character that has long distinguished it from many purpose-built ski destinations.

Located in the Savoie region at an altitude of approximately 1,850 metres, Val d’Isère forms part of the wider Tignes-Val d’Isère ski area and benefits from one of the longest and most reliable snow seasons in the Alps. The resort’s ski domain offers 300 kilometres of pistes, with around 60 per cent of terrain situated above 2,200 metres, supported by access to the Grande Motte and Pisaillas glacier sectors.

As competition among leading Alpine destinations intensifies, Val d’Isère is increasingly highlighting a combination of high-altitude skiing and traditional mountain-village charm. The resort traces its history back centuries and remains known for its baroque church, stone-and-wood architecture and historic hamlets such as Le Fornet, features that continue to underpin its appeal to international visitors seeking authenticity alongside world-class skiing.

Recent developments across the ski area reinforce that positioning. Among the notable additions is the new Vallon Gondola, which connects skiers to the Vallon de l’Iseran sector and incorporates an immersive mountain-themed experience at the upper station. The project is designed to enhance access to high-alpine terrain while enriching the overall visitor journey.

Sustainability is also becoming a defining part of the resort’s strategy. Val d’Isère received the Flocon Vert label, recognising its environmental and sustainable-development commitments. The destination has expanded the use of electric and biofuel-powered transport, while all piste-grooming machines are now equipped with radar systems and operate using HVO recycled biofuel. Local tourism and mountain-sector organisations have additionally signed a commitment supporting a “zero wild waste” objective by 2030.

Family tourism remains another growth area. Resort operators have continued investing in services aimed at younger guests, including dedicated learning zones, childcare facilities, ski-school programmes and mountain-themed discovery experiences. Attractions such as the Valkids area on Solaise are designed to introduce children to mountain professions and the broader alpine environment in an engaging way.

Accessibility around the resort is also being enhanced through an extensive free shuttle network linking key districts including La Daille, the village centre and Le Fornet, helping visitors move easily between accommodation, ski lifts and activities.

With demand for premium mountain experiences remaining strong, Val d’Isère is positioning itself as more than a ski resort. By blending a snow-sure high-altitude ski domain with environmental stewardship, family-focused programming and a deep-rooted Alpine identity, the destination is seeking to secure its place at the forefront of European mountain tourism for years to come.

The season gets underway with First Tracks weekend on 28th and 29th November, bringing open-weekend skiing and entertainment, alongside up to 40% off stays when booked as a package through Val d’Isère Réservation. Stretching all the way through to 2nd May 2027, Val d’Isère’s long winter season offers plenty of time to enjoy the slopes, from early winter through to spring.
