Gurgl:mountain moments, construction site and future work.
30/October/2026
ummer 2026 was a special time for Gurgl – and challenging in many respects. While guests enjoyed hiking trails, excursion destinations, and alpine tranquility, intensive work was underway behind the scenes on the further development of the destination: The new reservoir in Obergurgl, at an altitude of 2,037 meters, is creating important infrastructure for the coming years – with a storage capacity of 74,160 m³, more efficient snowmaking, and a clear focus on responsible alpine development.
For this year's summer operations, the project also presented a challenging task. The closed Section I of the Hohe Mut cable car, construction areas, and necessary detours had to be organized in such a way that guests could have the best possible holiday experience despite the restrictions.
These included, among other things:
• A shuttle bus as an alternative to the train
• A bypass hiking trail away from construction noise, dust and dirt
• Ongoing, detailed communication with partner businesses and accommodations
• Clear information for guests – without making the construction site the focus of the holiday experience
The fact that this summer was nevertheless well-received is also shown by the figures: The Hohe Mut cable car recorded 39,473 rides, the Kirchenkar cable car 18,463 rides. The Top Mountain Motorcycle Museum counted 26,998 visitors. A total of 65,310 overnight stays were registered up to and including August.
Things are currently quieter in Gurgl. Many businesses are in the off-season, while renovations, technical checks and preparations for the 2026/27 winter season and the Ski World Cup are already in full swing.
These weeks demonstrate what alpine destination development means today: ensuring a positive guest experience, rethinking infrastructure, closely involving partners, and making decisions that extend beyond a single season.
