Mechanical Failure Strands Skiers at Big SNOW; Lift Back in Service

Operations at Big SNOW American Dream, North America’s only indoor year-round ski resort, came to a temporary standstill this weekend following a mechanical malfunction that required a mid-lift rescue of several guests.

The incident occurred on May 8, 2026, when the facility’s primary lift—a Doppelmayr-CTEC fixed quad chairlift—suffered a mechanical failure, leaving approximately 25 skiers and snowboarders stranded above the indoor slopes. American Dream security confirmed on May 9 that power had been fully restored and the lift had returned to normal working order.

A "Standard" Emergency Unload

Resort officials emphasized that while the stoppage was unexpected, at no point was the safety of the guests compromised. The rescue was completed within 30 minutes using the lift’s auxiliary systems.

"All guests were safely unloaded using the lift’s backup motor system, and at no point were any guests in danger," stated Brianna Cortez, a spokeswoman for American Dream. "The issue was repaired within the hour, and all affected guests were provided with complimentary return vouchers for their loss of time."

Despite the response of local fire and police officials to the scene, the situation was resolved internally by the resort’s technical team before external intervention was required.

The "Island in the Sky" Stays Chilly

Big SNOW, which maintains a constant temperature of 28°F regardless of the New Jersey heat outside, is a 4-acre facility owned by Triple Five Group. While mechanical hiccups are rare, the resort’s protocol for backup motor evacuations is a standard safety feature mandated by federal passenger ropeway standards.

Concerts Coming: American Dream Eyes the World Cup

The lift incident comes at a busy time for the mega-complex as it prepares for a massive summer. American Dream recently announced the debut of the Dream Live Performing Arts Center, a new 3,000-seat venue set to open in time for the 2026 FIFA World Cup festivities.

  • First Act: Moroccan-American rapper French Montana is slated to be the first artist to take the stage on June 13, performing a post-game concert following the Brazil vs. Morocco match at nearby MetLife Stadium.

  • Dream Fan Fest: The new venue will serve as the hub for a 39-day "Dream Fan Fest," featuring viewing parties, celebrity appearances, and water park events throughout the international soccer tournament.

  • While the ski lift is back to spinning for the "shredders" in the snow, the rest of the complex is shifting gears toward a high-octane summer of music and sport.
