German cable car industry reports positive results for the 2025/26 winter season

With an early onset of winter, abundant natural snow, and cold temperatures, many German ski resorts started their season as early as the end of November and benefited from good conditions for artificial snowmaking. This once again made a significant contribution to the consistently high quality of the slopes – especially given the increasingly changeable weather patterns – and underscores its central role in providing a reliable winter sports experience.

Investments and innovations such as the new Kreuzwankl chairlift in the Garmisch-Classic ski area have been very well received by guests.

During warmer periods – especially around Christmas – German cable car companies once again demonstrated their flexibility and adaptability: In addition to traditional skiing, alternative activities such as tobogganing and winter hiking proved very popular. Year-round attractions, such as the Silberberg Coaster in Bodenmais, also generated high demand.

After a changeable period during the Carnival holidays, a subsequent cold spell with plenty of sunshine brought ideal winter sports conditions once again. Overall, the industry is drawing a positive conclusion and confirming the high appeal of winter experiences close to home. Due to the favorable conditions, some ski resorts have even extended their season beyond Easter. This year's winter season is rounded off by ideal conditions for spring skiing in the high-alpine ski areas on the Zugspitze and Nebelhorn, where skiing will continue until May 3, 2026.

"We are pleased that many of our cable car companies, especially in the low mountain ranges, were able to draw a positive conclusion for this winter season.

“It is also particularly positive that interest in skiing and snowboarding with short travel distances remains consistently high. At the same time, this demonstrates how important the adaptability of our industry is: With a wide range of offerings – from classic ski operations to attractive winter sports alternatives – we were able to inspire many guests even during warmer periods,” said Birgit Priesnitz, Managing Director of the Association of German Cable Cars and Schlepplife eV.
