Tourism Minister Kaniber presented funding certificates to the operators of two Bavarian mountain railways – the Fürstlich Hohenzollerische Arberbergbahn and the Hörnle-Schwebebahn – during a visit to the f.re.e travel fair.
The Hörnle cable car is a true icon among Bavarian cable cars: in operation since 1954, it is the oldest double chairlift in Bavaria and the second longest chairlift in Germany. Its unique feature is its swiveling seats, which remain folded down when not in use.
The approximately €800,000 in funding will ensure that the cable car's nostalgic charm is preserved during renovations, while simultaneously bringing safety standards up to the latest technological standards. This will also make barrier-free access possible. State Minister Kaniber commented: "This project demonstrates that preserving Bavarian cable cars has many facets and is not just about new construction or expansion."
The House of Hohenzollern-Sigmaringen is receiving the funding because it has operated the Arber cable car on the Großer Arber, the "King of the Bavarian Forest," for generations . State Minister Kaniber praised the diverse facilities, which offer a wide range of activities for skiers, bikers, and hikers in both winter and summer.
"The Arber cable car is an exemplary model worthy of funding for year-round operation in the Bavarian Forest," the minister explained at the presentation of the funding certificate. The operator will use the €500,000 grant for renovations that will significantly enhance summer use. "This is very important for cable cars in low mountain ranges, given the decreasing reliability of snow cover," said Minister Kaniber.
