Hoher Kasten has record year and is setting the course for the future
03/June/2026
Hoher Kasten Revolving Restaurant and Cable Car AG looks back on an exceptionally successful 2025 financial year. With a total of 216,374 passenger journeys, the fourth-highest ridership figure in the company's history was achieved. A strong spring and a busy end to the year more than compensated for the weather-related dip in summer.
The financial results were particularly positive. Rail revenue rose to CHF 3.16 million, reaching a new record high. This represents an increase of approximately 20% compared to the previous year. Revenue per passenger also increased significantly to CHF 14.61. Despite depreciation totaling CHF 1.62 million – of which approximately CHF 948,000 was necessary for operations and CHF 672,000 was extraordinary – the company achieved a net profit of CHF 137,527. At the same time, the mortgage debt was reduced by a further CHF 1.2 million.
Exiting the Alliance Swiss Pass proves its worth
The second year after withdrawing from the Alliance Swiss Pass confirms last year's conclusion that the withdrawal has had no or only a modest impact on passenger numbers. The simplified fare structure and higher revenue per passenger contribute significantly to the positive overall development.
The "New Cable Car" project is entering its decisive phase.
In the 2025 financial year, the modernization of the cable car technology was the focus of the board of directors' work. After a thorough examination of various options, the decision was made in favor of a single-pylon design, which offers clear advantages technically, scenically, and economically.
The planned design preserves the current route and the structural elements of the valley and mountain stations as much as possible. Of particular importance is the distinctive opening of the mountain station, which shapes the appearance of the Kastenkopf mountain and should remain unchanged.
Garaventa AG from Goldau has been commissioned with the further planning and complete replacement of the cable car technology. Preparations for the planning approval process are running concurrently, with submission scheduled for summer 2026. The goal remains to put the new cable car into operation in 2029, thereby ensuring long-term accessibility to the Hoher Kasten mountain.
