Schwoich moves forward with plans to replace its aging local infrastructure

A new era is on the horizon for winter sports enthusiasts in Schwoich, as the municipality moves forward with plans to replace its aging local infrastructure. The community's beloved Hochfeld ski lift has officially reached the end of its technical lifespan, prompting local officials to acquire a pre-owned system to keep the slopes active.

The municipality of Schwoich purchased the used lift system for approximately €87,000. While the system is secured, local officials emphasize that the physical installation will require significant further investment, particularly for necessary spare parts and an additional support structure.

Landowner Negotiations and Long-Term Strategy

For Schwoich Mayor Peter Payr, the immediate priority rests on securing the future of the land itself. The municipality's existing leases with local landowners are set to expire in five years. Securing new, long-term approvals is a vital step, as these agreements are legally required for the municipality to qualify for essential state subsidies.

Beyond the lift line, the project will trigger additional infrastructure upgrades. Installing the new system will necessitate extensive renovations to the facilities located at the lower lift station.

Looking long-term, the municipality is also tasked with reshaping its operational framework. Local leadership must develop an adapted operating concept and negotiate an extension of their partnership with the neighboring Scheffau Ski Area, as their current cooperation agreement expires in 2032. Schwoich officials are highly optimistic about continuing this successful collaboration well past that deadline.

A Vital Asset for Young Skiers

The urgency behind the project underscores just how vital the Hochfeld lift is to the local community.

"The winter sports club is incredibly active," Mayor Payr explained. "Last year, we had over 100 days where the lift operated very well."

In addition to hosting numerous seasonal events, the local winter sports club utilizes the lift to run a highly popular kindergarten ski course, introducing the region's youngest residents to the sport. To ensure the facility remains accessible, the municipality of Schwoich directly covers all of the lift's ongoing operational costs.
