North Carolina General Assembly Adopts, and Governor Stein Signs Update to the Winter Sports Safety Act
09/July/2026
The North Carolina General Assembly adopted updates to the Winter Sports Safety Act, addressing needed changes for the North Carolina Ski Industry. The legislation was signed into law by Governor Stein on July 7, 2026. “These improvements modernize the law related to skiing and snowboarding, keep pace with changes in technology, and ensure that our industry remains viable,” said Kimberley Jochl, President of the North Carolina Ski Areas Association.
The North Carolina Ski Areas Association is focused on providing a fun and exhilarating winter recreational environment, which includes safety on the slopes. The law includes protections against ‘hit and run’ skiing and clarifies the expectations of skiers and snowboarders on the slopes while maintaining ski area operator responsibilities.
Each year, hundreds-of-thousands of visitors flock to the North Carolina mountains to enjoy skiing and snowboarding at one of the state’s six ski areas: Appalachian Ski Mtn., Beech Mountain Resort, Cataloochee Ski Area, Hatley Pointe, Sapphire Valley Ski Area, and Sugar Mountain Resort. “The ski industry is a vital part of the Western North Carolina economy, and we are grateful for the support of the General Assembly and the Governor in recognizing our industry’s commitment to recreation, health and wellness, and a great North Carolina experience,” said Jochl.
The North Carolina Ski Areas Association expresses its appreciation to Senators Buck Newton, Danny Britt, Ralph Hise, and Warren Daniel, Speaker Destin Hall, and Representatives Dudley Greene, Ray Pickett, and Sarah Stevens for their leadership on this legislation.
