Local Art Takes Flight: Heavenly Gondola Transformation Spotlights Lake Tahoe Conservation

Visitors riding the iconic Heavenly Mountain Resort gondola this summer are being treated to a striking new visual experience that merges public art with environmental advocacy.

In a newly launched collaboration, Heavenly has partnered with local advocacy group Keep Tahoe Blue and the non-profit Arts and Culture El Dorado to debut a fully wrapped gondola cabin. The eye-catching public art piece is designed to promote eco-friendly transit and inspire collective community action to protect the famous alpine lake.

A Panoramic Vision of Environmental Stewardship

The vinyl wrap was designed by Tahoe City-based artist Bryn Merrell (known creatively as brynmermaidmerrell). Her custom artwork features a sprawling, colorful panoramic landscape that captures the natural beauty of the Tahoe Basin, stretching from the rugged East Shore all the way to Emerald Bay.

Strategically woven into the scenery is an illustration of the Emerald Bay Shuttle, a regional transit service that allows tourists and locals to visit one of the lake's most heavily congested destinations without driving personal vehicles.

"It’s so much easier to enjoy Tahoe’s beauty when you’re not driving," said Jesse Patterson, Chief Strategy Officer for Keep Tahoe Blue. "The service makes it possible for anyone to visit one of Tahoe’s most iconic destinations without the stress of traffic or the lake-damaging pollution that comes with driving our own cars."

Beyond the Canvas: $100,000 for Regional Transit

The partnership goes significantly deeper than a cosmetic upgrade for the resort's fleet. Through Vail Resorts' EpicPromise program, Heavenly is backing the message with a $100,000 multi-year grant specifically dedicated to expanding regional, shared transportation solutions.

The primary goal of the funding is to address three critical environmental threats to the area:

  • Traffic Congestion: Reducing the total number of cars idling on mountain corridors.

  • Tailpipe Emissions: Lowering air pollution that traps heat in the basin.

  • Lake Runoff: Decreasing tire wear particles and road debris that wash into the lake during storms, which severely impacts Lake Tahoe's famous water clarity.

Turn Inspiration into Action

Passengers who step inside the uniquely wrapped cabin will find interactive signage and scannable QR codes. The interactive elements guide riders on how to utilize the basin's clean, connected public transportation network and explain how making small choices—like opting for a shuttle or carpooling—makes a measurable impact on conservation.

The initiative directly aligns with Keep Tahoe Blue's ongoing regional campaign for a "Car-Free, Care-Free Tahoe"—a community vision centered around parking a personal vehicle just once and traveling throughout the resort communities seamlessly via alternative transit.

The newly wrapped art cabin is officially in rotation and will be soaring above the south shore all summer long.
