Eleventh-Hour Deal Saves Insolvent Karkogelbahn Resort From Liquidation

In a dramatic, eleventh-hour turnaround, the insolvent ski resort on the Karkogel mountain in Abtenau (Tennengau) has been saved. Following intense, down-to-the-wire negotiations, the Salzburg Raiffeisen Association and the local landowners—who had previously refused to sign a critical lease extension—reached an agreement on Tuesday afternoon.

The breakthrough comes just in time. Had the lease agreement until 2045 not been signed, the restructuring process would have collapsed entirely, triggering the liquidation of the company's bankruptcy assets on July 1st.

High-Stakes Negotiations Deliver a Future

"It was a tough process," admitted Raiffeisen Association spokesman Sigi Kämmerer. "It required many trust-building discussions over the past few days and hours. But ultimately, it has reached a positive conclusion. We are pleased, and this is incredibly important for the entire Lammertal region."

The negotiating table in Abtenau drew high-profile figures over recent days, including Raiffeisen Association Director General Heinz Konrad and Salzburg's Deputy Governor, Marlene Svazek (FPÖ).

According to insolvency administrator Markus Stranimaier, the breakthrough followed a period of unrelenting pressure. "We all tried our best, but apparently we didn't manage to achieve it initially," Stranimaier noted, adding that parties had been negotiating "very, very intensively" since Monday, June 22nd. While the farming couple who owns the land ultimately signed the contract on Tuesday afternoon, they declined to comment publicly.

€5 Million Injection and a Winter Strategy

With the lease secured, the Raiffeisen Association is officially taking over the mountain lifts, bringing a wave of relief and a substantial financial commitment to the region:

• Financial Investment: Raiffeisen will inject approximately €5 million into upgrading and renovating the ski resort.

• Job Security: All six current mountain lift employees will retain their jobs.

• Summer Pause: Due to the ongoing insolvency proceedings, the popular summer toboggan run will remain closed for the current season.

Combating Lower Altitudes with Snow Security

Sitting at a relatively low altitude between 742 and 1,139 meters above sea level, the Karkogel resort faces natural climate challenges. However, the new management remains highly confident about the resort's winter viability, thanks to a newly constructed reservoir.

"It's important to remember that we now have this reservoir, which should be sufficient in terms of volume," Kämmerer emphasized. "We are very optimistic about getting enough snow days."

The reservoir itself was at the heart of the resort's financial downfall; a bitter dispute over massive construction cost overruns originally triggered the company's insolvency.

To smooth over the remaining bureaucratic hurdles, Deputy Governor and Nature Conservation Officer Marlene Svazek announced on Tuesday that she will support the resort in securing the missing nature conservation permit required for the reservoir's riser pipe, which currently only holds a water rights permit.

Industry Expertise and a Two-Season Vision

To ensure long-term economic stability and avoid the pitfalls of the past, the resort is bringing in serious industry heavyweights. Ernst Brandstätter, the long-time former head of the renowned Flachau cable car company in Pongau, will join the Abtenau management team.

The strategy moving forward relies on maximizing the mountain's potential across both winter and summer seasons to ensure a steady economic stream.

Abtenau's Mayor, Johann Schnitzhofer (ÖVP), highlighted the dual importance of the resort to both locals and tourists:

"In the summer, we have a very high volume of tourists from all over the state of Salzburg who use the toboggan run," Mayor Schnitzhofer emphasized. "In the winter, it is primarily local young skiers, but also all ski racers from across the state, who take advantage of it."

With the restructuring plan now heading to a formal vote in the bankruptcy proceedings, Abtenau's local skiing community and regional tourism sector can finally breathe a sigh of relief. The Karkogelbahn has a future after all.
