Sleeping Beauty Awakens: How Heavy Investment is Fueling San Bernardino’s Alpine Renaissance

For years, the quiet Swiss resort village of San Bernardino in Graubünden lay in a state of suspended animation. Nestled just south of the San Bernardino Pass in the municipality of Mesocco, the destination had fallen into a gentle slumber—its lifts underutilized, its grand hotels fading.

Today, that narrative has been completely rewritten. Driven by an ambitious multi-million-franc master plan, San Bernardino is experiencing a meteoric rise in visitor numbers, transforming into one of Switzerland’s most compelling tourism comeback stories.

A Surge in Visitor Numbers

During an informational evening hosted jointly by investment firm San Bernardino Swiss Alps and the municipality of Mesocco, project leaders presented compelling proof that their strategy is working:

  • Winter Stays Skyrocket: Overnight stays during the winter season surged 85%—jumping from 9,640 in 2022/23 to 17,874 in the 2025/26 season.

  • Mountain Lifts Momentum: First-time entries at the local ski lifts expanded from 30,974 in 2023/24 to 42,347 in the most recent winter period.

  • Summer Growth: The resort's momentum isn't confined to winter. Overnight stays for June 2026 recorded a 40% increase compared to the same month in 2025.

Wrapping Up Phase Zero

Much of this early momentum stems from the vision of Ticino-based investor Stefano Artioli. Launched in 2023, "Phase Zero" represented an initial commitment of roughly 100 million Swiss francs (CHF) to restore core village infrastructure, reopen long-closed ski lifts, and breathing fresh energy into historic hospitality assets.

Phase Zero is now reaching its conclusion, anchored by the comprehensive restoration of the Hotel Ravizza, which is set to reopen as a premier four-star establishment.

The Next Frontier: Thermal Baths, New Lifts, and 5-Star Luxury

With the foundation established, San Bernardino Swiss Alps and local stakeholders are shifting into the next development cycle, built around four major pillars:

  • Acuforta Thermal Resort: A massive CHF 200 million flagship development featuring a 5-star luxury hotel, high-end private residences, and a state-of-the-art wellness facility spanning over 2,000 square meters.

  • "Le Terrazze" Residential Complex: Planning applications for the new residential development behind the Albarella complex have officially been published for public review.

  • Confin Ski Area Expansion: A CHF 30 million upgrade to the local ski slopes. Plans include a modern 6-person chairlift, expanded technical snowmaking along key ridge lines, and a new mountain restaurant. Pending public approval in early 2027, construction is slated for 2028, with the new lifts targeting an opening for the 2028/29 winter season.

  • Year-Round Amenities: Expanding non-skiing sports, family activities, and commercial services to ensure year-round vitality.

Municipal Infrastructure Keeping Pace

Recognizing that private capital requires strong public support, the municipality of Mesocco, led by Mayor Mattia Ciocco (FDP), is executing parallel infrastructure upgrades:

  • 400-space parking structure near the motorway exit to streamline arrival traffic.

  • Enhancements to the cantonal road and local transport corridors.

  • Affordable local housing developments to support workers and permanent residents.

  • Expanded sports center facilities.

  • Sustainable Growth in a Changing Climate

  • While excitement surrounds San Bernardino’s rapid rise, local community discussions have highlighted important questions regarding building scale, water consumption for snowmaking, and long-term sustainability amid changing alpine climate conditions.

In response, municipal leadership reaffirmed a firm commitment to concentrate new developments strictly within designated building zones, protecting the pristine, surrounding alpine environment.

For Graubünden’s southernmost alpine hub, the shift from a sleepy transit village to a thriving year-round destination is no longer just a plan on paper—it is already taking shape on the slopes and streets of San Bernardino.
