Another successful year for the Brunni cable cars

The Brunni cable cars look back on another record year in 2025/2026. The mix of summer and winter offerings met with great demand, and the catering services also recorded very good figures. The strong operating result (EBITDA) strengthens the financial foundation of Brunni-Bahnen AG and allows for the early repayment of maturing loans.
Brunni-Bahnen AG closed the 2025/2026 financial year with a profit of CHF 302,915. Net income across all departments reached a record high of CHF 9,369,000. "We didn't expect to achieve another record turnover of this magnitude after 2024/25," says Managing Director Roman Barmettler. During the 338 operating days of the past financial year, over 260,000 guests visited the Brunni area for the first time. "Both in summer and winter, guests appreciate the combination of nature, activities, and gastronomy. Even in winters with little snow, the overall experience on the sunny slopes of Engelberg proves to be a winning combination," says Chairman of the Board Fredy Miller.
Strong summer business
The summer season of 2025 got off to a promising start. The holidays in May and June, in particular, resulted in high visitor numbers. The Brunni cable cars are heavily dependent on the weather. Despite a mixed July, revenue increased by 18 percent compared to the previous summer. Currently, almost 50% of the annual revenue comes from the summer months.
Despite low natural precipitation, the winter season was a success thanks to the timely start of artificial snowmaking at the end of November. "The Christmas and holiday season was once again very busy, which was certainly also due to the sunny weather," said Roman Barmettler. Klostermatte kept all its lifts open until the last day of the season at the beginning of March. Lift revenues increased by 9% compared to the previous year.
The strong cash flow made it possible to reduce debt. "With debt of only CHF 3.623 million and an equity ratio of 72 percent, we are in an excellent financial position. I am proud that, as a financially sound mountain railway, we can confidently approach the planned investments," says Fredy Miller.
Equilibrium costs
The financial year was also extremely successful on the cost side. Energy prices stabilized at a normal level, and there were no extraordinary cost deviations. With an EBITDA of CHF 2.3 million, the company achieved the best result in its history.
The strong financial foundation creates optimal conditions for strategically advancing upcoming investments in the company's future. Thanks to the positive earnings situation, additional depreciation of CHF 0.4 million could also be recorded on property, plant and equipment – particularly in the areas of snowmaking and catering infrastructure.
Gastronomy as an important success factor
The catering sector once again made a significant contribution to the positive business results, accounting for around 40 percent of total revenue. At CHF 3.7 million, this represents a slight increase of 2 percent compared to the previous year. "The close connection between the railway operations and the catering creates valuable synergies and enriches the overall experience in the Brunni area," explains Roman Barmettler. Overnight accommodations also developed positively. The number of overnight stays at the Brunnihütte increased by over 33 percent. Overnight stays at the Berglodge, however, developed more modestly and remained below expectations.
Various smaller investments further enhanced the catering offerings. The main dining room and the smaller lounge at the Brunnihütte received new wood paneling and flooring in a stylish Alpine chic design. Emphasis was placed on preserving the authentic character and cozy atmosphere of the traditional mountain hut. The premises of the family restaurant OX were also modernized with new flooring and new furniture. These investments improve comfort and the overall experience for guests.
