IVSI Launches Landmark Overhaul Of Snowsport Instructor Licencing

The International Federation of Snowsports Instructors (IVSI) has announced a sweeping reform of its global instructor certification system, introducing NFC-enabled smart cards that can be read by any standard NFC device, a redesigned four-level qualification structure, and a unified curriculum that extends for the first time across all recognised snowsports disciplines. The changes, presented to member nations recently represent the most significant evolution in the IVSI's approach to instructor development and credentialling in the organisation's history.

THE END OF THE ANNUAL STAMP — A SMARTER, MORE SECURE CARD

Perhaps the most immediately visible change for instructors and employers alike is the replacement of the traditional stamped card with a state-of-the-art NFC-enabled credential. The new IVSI card can be read instantly by any NFC-capable device — including standard smartphones — eliminating the need for the annual stamp renewal process that has defined the certification system to date and creating a far more robust and tamper-resistant form of credential verification. It’s as easy to check an instructor’s status as buying a cup of coffee by tapping your mobile phone.

The implications for the industry are considerable. Clubs, resorts, and employers across the world will now be able to verify an instructor's certification status in real time, with no specialist equipment required and no risk of outdated or fraudulently stamped cards entering circulation. For instructors, the card provides a single, permanent, verifiable credential that travels with them across borders and employment settings without the administrative overhead of annual renewal stamps.

Thomas Braun of the DSV [German Ski Federation] said ‘The new cards are secure and with more than 9000 instructors this allows clubs and organisations a reliable way to ensure their team are qualified”

A NEW FOUR-LEVEL FRAMEWORK — CLARITY, PROGRESSION, AMBITION

Alongside the new card, IVSI is introducing a restructured qualification framework built around three certified levels — Silver, Gold, and Platinum — each representing a meaningful and defined step forward in an instructor's capabilities, responsibilities, and professional reach and an the white card officially recognizing those starting their coaching and instructing journey.

Rudi Leber, President of the Austrian Association of Snowsports Instructors [OSVI] said ‘the new system and curriculum ensures that clubs and organisations have well trained staff, and reflects the roles our members have”

A FRAMEWORK FOR THE FUTURE

Taken together, the NFC card, the four-level structure, and the universal curriculum represent a coherent and ambitious re imagining of what professional ski instruction credentialling should look like in the modern era — more secure, more legible, and more inclusive of the full breadth of winter sports practice.

Michel Lenaerts President of BFSI [Belgian Federation of Snowsports Instructors] said “As a small nation this new framework strengthens Belgian instructors as the new cards are recognised by every IVSI member nation. The card allows any organisation to immediately see how a Belgian instructor would fit into another country’s award scheme – whether in Canada or Chile, Norway or New Zealand”

The International Federation of Snowsports Instructors (IVSI) is the global body responsible for the standards, certification, and development of snowsports instructors worldwide.
