WTF -  world's first whirlpool gondola developed.....

A doctoral student in Austria wants to send skiers and hikers up the mountain in a bathtub. The cable car industry is taking him seriously.

There is a particular kind of vertigo that comes from imagining yourself half-submerged in steaming water, drifting five hundred metres above a valley floor, with nothing between you and the view but a pane of glass and a cable. That, roughly, is the pitch behind the Bubble Peak Whirlpoolgondel — a working concept for a cable car cabin that is, in effect, a mobile jacuzzi.

The idea comes from Paul Demschar, a 27-year-old mechanical engineer and doctoral candidate at the Montanuniversität Leoben in Austria, who has spent much of his life fascinated by ropeways. What began as a personal curiosity has turned into a patented design, a costed business case, and — more surprisingly — a nod of technical approval from Doppelmayr, the Austrian company that is the world's largest builder of cable cars.

From childhood hobby to engineering problem

Demschar's starting observation was one that anyone in the alpine tourism trade would recognise: over the past decade, ski resorts have invested heavily in high-capacity gondolas built to move thousands of skiers an hour in winter. In summer, those same machines often run half-empty. Meanwhile, wellness offerings — spas, saunas, infinity pools — have become a competitive necessity at mountain destinations, and operators are increasingly turning the lift itself into part of the entertainment, not just the means of getting up the hill.

Put those two trends together, Demschar reasoned, and a bathing gondola stops sounding like a novelty and starts looking like an asset for the quieter half of the year.

The engineering problem, however, was not trivial. Water sloshing around in a moving vehicle is a stability and safety hazard; carrying enough of it adds weight the cable and drive system have to cope with; and heating water on a cabin that is disconnected from any power source for much of its journey is its own puzzle. Demschar spent two and a half years working through those issues with fellow mechanical and process engineers before arriving at what he considers the key move: splitting the cabin in two. The bathing unit — the actual tub, with its passengers — travels in the gondola. The water treatment and filtration system stays behind in the valley station. Because passengers don't change over mid-ride, and the water is fully exchanged and cleaned at the station between trips, the split system sidesteps a hygiene problem that has reportedly stumped earlier attempts to combine water and moving transit.

The numbers

According to figures Demschar has shared with Austrian outlets, each cabin holds 400 to 500 litres of water and two bathers, with total gondola weight capped at 800 kilograms. A single round trip — up the mountain and back down — can last up to 30 minutes, the window during which the water can be kept warm and circulating before the cabin needs to reconnect to the station's treatment plant. One water-treatment installation at a station could theoretically service up to six cabins running in rotation.

On cost, the numbers are concrete enough to look like a real proposal rather than a thought experiment: six cabins plus the accompanying water-treatment plant come to an estimated €230,000 in total investment — not small change, but modest set against the price of a new high-capacity lift, which typically runs into the tens of millions.

Demschar imagines a range of uses beyond the straightforward up-and-down ride: sunset trips, journeys timed to connect with a valley restaurant booking, even a static installation — a whirlpool gondola parked permanently on a hotel roof, which would sidestep the water-transfer problem entirely since there's no ride to complete.

Doppelmayr says: technically, yes

The detail that has turned this from a design-school curiosity into an industry talking point is Doppelmayr's involvement. According to Austria's Styrian Chamber of Commerce, the manufacturer has reviewed the concept's technical feasibility and given it a green light, and has expressed interest in producing the cabins itself. That is a meaningful vote of confidence from a company whose name is essentially synonymous with cable car engineering worldwide, tracing back through mergers with Garaventa, CWA and Von Roll to become the dominant force in the sector.

It's worth being precise about what that endorsement does and doesn't mean, though. Coverage of the project — including reporting that put the same question directly to Doppelmayr — has been careful to note that what exists today is renderings and patent filings, not a working prototype. No resort has yet signed on to build or host one, and Demschar himself has said he's hoping the recent wave of attention will draw interest from winter-sports destinations willing to fund a first working prototype. The gap between "technically feasible" and "operating on a mountain next season" is, in other words, still wide.

Not the first strange thing to happen in a cable car

Skeptics might reasonably ask why anyone would want to ride uphill in a hot tub. But the Bubble Peak concept arrives into an industry that has a long-running fondness for turning gondola cabins into something other than transport. In Finnish Lapland, the Ylläs ski area has run a wood-fired sauna gondola since the 2000s, sending up to four sweating passengers on a roughly 20-minute loop above the slopes. On Switzerland's Titlis, decommissioned gondola cabins have found a second life as small standalone saunas, upcycled by designers into panoramic backyard sweat-boxes. Austria's Tyrol region has sent a retired cabin — reworked as an infrared wellness pod — all the way to Everest Base Camp for exhausted climbers. Elsewhere, cabins have done time as the world's smallest restaurant, a wedding chapel above the Rhine in Cologne, and fairy-tale-themed rides for children.

Set against that history, a whirlpool gondola looks less like an isolated eccentricity and more like the logical next step in an industry that has already discovered how much appetite there is for turning a utilitarian ride into an experience worth paying extra for.

Why the industry is listening

That appetite is backed by real numbers. Summer tourism now accounts for more than 15 percent of the Austrian cable car industry's turnover, according to the sector's trade association, and operators have been steadily extending their summer operating seasons — many now run from spring deep into autumn — specifically to capture demand and improve the utilisation of infrastructure that would otherwise sit idle for months. Industry surveys point to a clear pattern: distinctive, well-designed attractions are what convince summer visitors to choose one mountain over another, and to come back more than once in a season.

Whether the Bubble Peak Whirlpoolgondel becomes one of those attractions — or remains an elegant engineering exercise on a doctoral student's hard drive — will depend on whether a resort operator is willing to be first. Given how quickly a similarly outlandish idea like the sauna gondola went from novelty to fixture, the cable car industry may not have to wait long to find out.
