Sunday River Puts North America's Most Powerful Snowmaking System to the Test

Winter's alarm clock just went off. At 5AM, Sunday River's snow guns fired up on Rogue Angel, Excalibur, and Lollapalooza for the resort's annual fall snowmaking test.

"There's nothing like hearing those snow guns for the first time. It's the moment we know winter's really on its way," said Sunday River General Manager Brian Heon.

The resort operates the most powerful snowmaking system in North America, moving 10,500 gallons of water per minute through more than 2,000 snow guns spread across the resort's eight interconnected peaks. In other words, that's enough water to fill Gillette Stadium in just over two days, Fenway Park in under 17 hours, an Olympic sized pool in under an hour, or a bathtub in less than half a second.

That kind of power doesn't happen by accident. Snowmaking is in Sunday River's DNA, and the resort invests in it year after year with one goal: getting skiers and riders on snow fast. This year, the resort is debuting the new SMI Panther Fan Gun, making Sunday River one of just four resorts in the country to put the technology to the test.

An official opening date hasn't been set, but Sunday River's snowmaking team is ready to go the moment overnight temperatures drop into the 25-30 degree range.
