San Martino di Castrozza–Passo Rolle: Launch of the new cable car connection
09/October/2026
Construction of the new cable car link between San Martino di Castrozza and Passo Rolle has officially begun. This strategic infrastructure project aims to improve mobility in the region and strengthen the tourism competitiveness of the Primiero Valley. The project, being developed by Leitner, represents one of the most significant investments in the development of the Trentino mountains in recent years.
The project represents an investment of approximately €55 million, financed by the Autonomous Province of Trento through Trentino Sviluppo. It will involve the construction of two coupled cable cars with ten-person gondolas. The new connection will span 4.6 kilometers and link Bellaria, Prà delle Nasse, Fosse di Sopra, and Passo Rolle via four stations.
Once completed, the infrastructure will allow Passo Rolle to be reached from Bellaria in just 13 minutes without changing trains. This will create a single large ski carousel integrating the Tognola, Ces, Val Cigolera, and Rolle areas. The facility will have an initial capacity of 1,500 people per hour, which can be expanded to up to 1,800 passengers.
The project is also characterized by a special focus on landscape integration and ecological sustainability. In Prà delle Nasse, the line will cross the protected area with a single span of 290 meters, thus avoiding any encroachment on the Special Conservation Area (SCA). The Fosse di Sopra station, on the other hand, will be built entirely underground. It will house the technical rooms, drive motors, snow groomer depot, and gondola storage, minimizing the visual impact of the structure.
In addition to the ski lifts, a new service center is being built in Prà delle Nasse, which will house ticket offices, an information point, a ski rental shop, a ski school, shops, and restaurants. The goal is to create a single, more modern and competitive ski area that can be used both in the winter and summer seasons.
Planned completion: The commissioning and official inauguration of the connection is scheduled for 2029. Italiabsolutely, Ufficio Stampa Provincia di Trento.
Technical details of the infrastructure
Number of cable car pylons: A total of 33 pylons (sostegni) will be erected along the 4.6 kilometer long route. Sci Magazine, Ufficio Stampa Provincia di Trento.
Additional stop: In addition to the four main stations, there will be a purely technical exit station at Sass Maor. This will allow skiers to ski directly to the Cimon ski school.
Wind stability: The system designed by Leitner is engineered for high wind resistance and can be operated safely at wind speeds of up to 75 km/h. Visit Trentino.
Accompanying slope: Together with the railway, a new panoramic ski slope will be created, leading from Malga Fosse to Prà delle Nasse Azienda per il Turismo San Martino di Castrozza.
Infrastructure adjustments: To optimize the project in terms of landscape, two intersecting medium-voltage power lines will be completely buried underground (Sci Magazine) and a section of the SS50 state road will be adapted to improve winter traffic (Azienda per il Turismo San Martino di Castrozza).
Two new cable cars will combine skiing and sustainable mobility, thus reducing traffic and environmental impact in the region. Investment volume of approximately 55 million euros.
