Norway's King Haakon steps down from the main committee for the Alpine World Ski Championships.
14/October/2026
King Haakon will not continue his position as a member of the main committee for the World Alpine Skiing Championships in Narvik 2029. The decision has been made as part of the review of the royal family's engagements and patronage after the change of throne.
The King took on the role in the main committee when he was Crown Prince, and has followed the Narvik 2029 project for a long time. At the same time, the Palace has emphasized that this is still a project the King cares about, and that participation during the actual World Cup in 2029 will be considered when the time comes.
– We understand that the change of throne involves a review of the King's many commitments and positions, and fully understand the decision not to continue his role in the main committee. At the same time, we would like to express how much it has meant to us that the King, as Crown Prince, wanted to be part of the main committee and has followed the work on Narvik 2029 over time, says ski president Roger Finjord.
The Norwegian Ski Association thanks HM the King for his commitment, support and good wishes for the continued work with the preparations for the World Championships. We also hope that there will be an opportunity to welcome the King to Narvik when the championships are held in 2029.
