ISPO Counts Down to Amsterdam: AI Sourcing, a Sustainability Runway and 500 Hosted Buyers

ISPO is now just under four weeks from opening night in its new home. Its latest round of announcements, sent to the trade this week, shows an event trying to prove it can be more than a change of venue. The Leaders' Summit opens on 3 November, and the Expo runs 4–5 November at RAI Amsterdam.

The buyer pitch

Commercial results are the show's central argument. ISPO says its €1 million Hosted Buyer Programme will bring more than 500 key buyers to Amsterdam, with over 4,000 scheduled meetings expected between buyers and exhibitors. The organisers' latest newsletter names Intersport, Sport 2000 Group International, JD Sports, Ellis Brigham and Sportler among the retail names heading to the show. Other announcements add Decathlon, GO Outdoors, Mountain Warehouse, REI Co-op and South Africa's Cape Union Mart.

Hosted buyers get reimbursed travel and accommodation. In return they commit to a schedule of pre-arranged meetings with brands of their choice. A Retail Advisory Council including Sport 2000, Sportler and Yonderland helped shape the format. Raccoon Media Group chief executive Mike Seaman has said that return on investment is everything for exhibitors, which explains the emphasis on lead generation and measurable meetings.

That €1 million is one-third of a €3 million organiser commitment. The rest goes to the Leaders' Summit content programme and to a social impact fund covering participation, grassroots sport and protecting the places people play.

An AI agent on the show floor

The most novel addition is a tie-up with Alibaba.com's Accio. It has been named ISPO's Official Agentic AI Partner and will run an "Exhibition Agent" for visitors. The agent is meant to act as a sourcing partner rather than a static floor map. Visitors can map a route, get matched with suppliers and search by photo. The system can carry a lead through to negotiation, compliance checks and logistics coordination.

The newsletter lists the Accio feature as "coming soon". Organisers say attendees can access it on registration or via on-site QR codes. Accio is also being rolled out at Hyve Group and Business Show Media events. Its pilot at Smart Manufacturing Week in Birmingham in June reportedly supported more than 13,000 visitors and over 430 exhibitors. Whether sports and outdoor buyers want to hand supplier discovery to an AI agent will be one of the more interesting tests of the show.

ISPO's own official app is now live for registered visitors and exhibitors.

Speakers: from summit to expo stage

The Leaders' Summit is a C-suite forum, with early-bird passes priced from €495 and capped at 200 seats. Confirmed speakers include filmmaker and mountaineer Jimmy Chin, Olympic track champion Allyson Felix, The North Face founder Hap Klopp, UEFA vice-president Professor Laura McAllister, Pentland Group's Andy Rubin and former IKEA/Ingka sustainability chief Pia Heidenmark Cook. Felix, whose ventures include the footwear brand Saysh and the athlete agency Always Alpha, will also speak at the co-located International Running Expo on women-centric product design.

The newsletter adds a second wave for the expo stages:

  • Amanda Smith, Monday Creative Inc, on the Podcast Studio

  • Mitch Hirose, YKK, and Amy Tsang, The Mills Fabrica, at the Ingredients & Components Impact Forum

  • Ashja Bosboom, Textilia, on the Podcast Studio

  • Michael van Velde, Craftmore and Albestar, on the Brand & Retail Horizons Stage

  • Zoë Pheniz McCandless, United Repair Centre, at the Fashion & Textiles Hub

The line-up leans towards materials, repair and circularity, which suits a fair that says sustainability is a core theme.

Brands, fashion and the social programme

Sweaty Betty will exhibit on stand 1F10 in Hall 1. The British women's activewear brand started with a single Notting Hill shop in 1998 and was bought by Wolverine Worldwide in 2021 for a reported £300 million. ISPO's announcements place it in the active lifestyle and apparel segment alongside Fabletics and 4F. Outdoor exhibitors include Rab, Vango, Berghaus, Montane, Mountain Equipment and Craghoppers, and running and performance brings in Suunto, Coros and Skechers Running.

Sustainability consultancy Eco Age, co-founded by Livia Firth, will stage a curated runway on the show floor. It will focus on the brands, materials and innovation behind the future of sportswear and outdoor apparel. Eco Age is best known for the Green Carpet Challenge and for advising luxury names including Stella McCartney and Gucci.

The social side is lively too:

  • An opening ceremony takes place at 9am on 4 November outside Entrance K.

  • The ISPO x IRX After Party that evening is sponsored by logistics group DSV.

  • The first 30 guests at the Scandinavian Village after-work drinks get a woollen gift from Ivanhoe.

  • The skills.lab Cube GO, a compact automated football activation, offers a 360-degree experience.

What the numbers actually say

Organisers' figures vary depending on the announcement. Earlier releases cited 500-plus exhibitors, while a more recent update cited more than 900 confirmed exhibitors and over 40 industry and media partnerships. Pre-show targets of around 25,000 industry professionals have been repeated consistently, but at least one partner outlet quotes figures of around 2,000 exhibitors and 50,000 visits. Treat those larger numbers with caution until the show reports its own final attendance.

After more than five decades in Munich, the real verdict comes on 4 November. If the buyers arrive and the meetings are booked, ISPO's new format will have passed its first test.
