GB's Team Carrick-Smith ready for their biggest winter yet

Britain’s team Carrick-Smith, three ski racing brothers (Freddy, Zak and Luca) that have already tasted success at the highest levels, are preparing for a season that includes the Alpine Skiing World Championships in the Swiss resort of Crans-Montana (1-14 February 2027).

The athletes, compete for Team GB

  • Luca Carrick Smith – GB Snowsport Europa Cup team, DOB: 13-05-2005 (age 21) | Disciplines: Slalom and Giant Slalom | Sponsors: Van Deer

  • Freddy Carrick-Smith – GB Snowsport World Cup team. DOB: 11-02-2007 (age 19) | Disciplines: Slalom, Giant Slalom and Super G | Sponsors: Dynastar

  • Zak Carrick-Smith – GB Snowsport Europa Cup team, DOB: 11-02-2007 (age 19) | Disciplines: Slalom, Giant Slalom, downhill and Super G | Sponsors: Van Deer

The season starts off the back of Southern Hemisphere competition results, including a family first, second and third podium sweep at Coronet Peak (Queenstown, New Zealand) on 2 September in a FIS (International Ski Federation) slalom race.

But with the World Cup calendar about to start on the Austrian glacier in Sölden (24-25 October), Freddy Carrick-Smith is getting ready to start in this elite field of world class skiers, competing in what is the inaugural Giant Slalom race of the season.

The brutal course, much of it on the steep glaciated terrain, is the highest in altitude on the World Cup circuit and one of the most technically demanding. The weekend sees huge crowds gathering to support the race and party in this famous mountain resort, also known for its James Bond scenes (Spectre 2015).

Throughout the winter, all three brothers will be competing across both Europa Cup and World Cup competitions in Europe and North America, following a Southern Hemisphere season that included a training camp in New Zealand. If results go to plan, they will all be heading to the Alpine Skiing World Championships in Crans-Montana during the first two weeks of February where both the top men and women Alpine ski racers gather for this bi-annual event that last took place in the French speaking Swiss resort 40 years ago (1987).

It’s the team’s biggest winter yet and they are more prepared than ever following the ‘summer’ season in New Zealand. Emma Carrick-Anderson, said: “we are really looking forward to the challenges of this season, with more World Cup and Europa Cup races taking place, we are going to be busy organising training and logistics for all three boys in a winter season that also includes the world championships”.

Freddy is competing this weekend on Sunday 25 October in the first stage of the Audi FIS Ski World Cup in the Austrian ski area of Sölden. Coverage is live on TNT Sports, with the first run starting at 9am GMT and the second run starting at 12pm GMT.

The team is still searching for funding to carry them through this season. If you would like to join the journey and support team, you can do so by donating to their GoFundMe fund: gofund.me/1a790678e

About Team Carrick-Smith

Freddy, Zak and Luca grew up in the ski resort of Tignes with their parents, Phil Smith and Emma Carrick-Anderson, owners of Snoworks Ski Courses. Emma competed in 4 Winter Olympic Games for Great Britain and is Britain’s most successful women’s slalom skier. Phil is a leading ski teacher and former trainer with the British Associations of Snowsports instructors. Today, they both coach their sons on a full-time basis.

The Carrick-Smith brothers started ski racing from a young age and quickly showed promise.

Their breakthrough results have come across youth and senior competition. In 2024, Zak made history at the Winter Youth Olympic Games in Gangwon (Korea), winning gold in the slalom and alpine combined, and silver in the giant slalom — Britain’s first ever alpine skiing medals at a Winter Olympic event. The following year, Freddy won giant slalom gold at the European Youth Olympic Festival, while Zak took bronze in the slalom. Freddy also claimed the U18 titles in both slalom and giant slalom that season.

The brothers have since made their mark at the FIS Alpine Junior World Ski Championships. Luca won slalom bronze at Tarvisio in 2025, Britain’s first medal at the championships since 1984. At Narvik in 2026, Freddy took silver in the slalom, while Zak finished seventh in the giant slalom. All three have also progressed onto the senior circuit, with World Cup starts and results in FIS and continental-level races.
