Get in the festive spirit with a seasonal city break to Geneva

This festive season, tourists looking to immerse themselves in the festive spirit should head to Geneva, which was awarded best Christmas city break by European Best Destinations in 2025 for its magical approach to celebrating the season.

In the shadow of the Alps, the shores of Lake Geneva are transformed into a winter wonderland with the opening of the Geneva Christmas Market from 19 November to Christmas Eve. Glittering beneath fairy lights that line the Quai du Mont-Blanc, the market is the perfect backdrop for ambling along with a cup of mulled wine keeping mittened hands warm.

When the cold sets in, The Fondue Chalet’s cosy interior invites guests to enjoy a warming selection of cheeses and meats, with views over the lake as it twinkles beneath the Christmas lights. For the more adventurous food lovers, a varied Christmas feast awaits at a selection of thirty street food stalls, after which adults can head down to the Christmas Pub for a winter aperitif, hosted by a DJ who will be sure to instil a sense of Christmas spirit.

Christmas shopping in Geneva transforms from a chore into an exciting festive activity, with small wooden chalets hosted by passionate local craftsmen lining the paths, filled with artisanal and unique creations that make gifts feel more personal. Stall exhibitors rotate weekly, so there's always something new to discover, and finding that perfect gift is never a lost hope.

For the little ones, the old-fashioned carousel will make them feel as though they’ve stepped into the Nutcracker, while creating a magical winter scene for passersby as jolly sounds of laughter and festive music wraps their senses in Christmas magic. After feeling inspired by the local craftsmen, the Yurt will have children coming together to create their own Christmas decorations, alongside fun games, facepainting, and enchanting storytelling, making the Geneva Christmas Market entertaining for all ages.

Back for another year is the annual Fête de l'Escalade celebration, a local Genevan tradition which sees Geneva’s cobblestone streets come alive with historical parades as participants dress in period costumes and traditional music fills the streets to recreate the ambience of 17th century Geneva. Taking place this year from 11 to 13 December, visitors can expect to be transported back in time with period speeches across the Old Town, artisanal demonstrations, and patriotic songs, while onlookers across the ages come together to smash the famous chocolate cauldron, honouring the tradition of the Marmite de L’Escalade.

For those looking to experience Geneva this festive season, the Geneva City Pass grants visitors discounted or complimentary access to over 60 activities across the city. For more information, please visit the Geneva Tourism website.
