Summer 2026: Curona de Gherdëina – The Crown of Val Gardena
20/May/2026
To truly experience the Dolomites, this 5-day self-guided trekking tour, the Curona de Gherdëina is one of the most spectacular trekking routes in North Italy crossing five Dolomite massifs, from the Odle peaks to the Puez plateau, and on to the Sella massif, the Sassolungo, and the Alpe di Siusi. This multi-day tour, approximately 60 kilometres long, completes a full loop of Val Gardena and crosses some of the most impressive landscapes in the Dolomites.
“Curona de Gherdëina” is the unique trekking tour on the fascinating mountain crown of Val Gardena on over 2.000 height meters. The 60 kilometres long tour goes from the Natural Park Puez-Odle in the northeast (Unesco World Heritage), to the Sella plateau in the southeast and the Sassolungo mountain group in the south of the valley. The Dolomites show its particular beauty; on every part of the trekking the “pale mountains” seem to take different shapes. Relaxing opportunities are provided in the mountain huts in which you can enjoy typical dishes and live unforgettable sunrises and sunsets.
The “Deluxe” version is a more comfortable alternative to hut-to-hut trekking combining high-alpine trekking with comfortable overnight stays in the valley. Instead of mountain huts, stay in hotels, guesthouses, or apartments in Ortisei, Santa Cristina, or Selva di Val Gardena – ideal for those who want to enjoy spectacular views during the day and relax in comfort in the evening. Thanks to cable cars, bus connections, and the free travel by bus offered by the Val Gardena Mobil Card, the individual stages are accessible, with hiking start points at the base or top of the lift stations.
The Curona de Gherdëina ‘deluxe’ is designed for those who want to experience the Dolomites intensely without giving up comfort. The combination of impressive self-guided daily stages, modern infrastructure, and cosy accommodation in the valley makes the tour appealing to both experienced hikers and enthusiastic recreational walkers.
Stage 1: Odle and Seceda
The route begins at Ortisei on the Rasciesa plateau and follows the northern slopes of the Odle peaks up to the famous Seceda ridge. Along the way, highlights include the Pieralongia rock towers, the UNESCO Mastlé viewpoint, and spectacular views of the iconic Seceda cliffs. Hikers can choose between a more demanding or an easier variant – walking time 4-6hrs.
Stage 2: Through the lunar landscape of the Puez
This is one of the most impressive sections of the entire tour. From Val Cisles, the route climbs via the Forcella Siëles to the rocky Puez plateau – a surreal karst landscape. The deep-blue Crespëina Lake and the striking Cir peaks create dramatic contrasts before reaching Passo Gardena. Walking time 6hrs 30
Stage 3: Queen stage across the Sella massif
Crossing the Sella massif is considered the ‘queen’ stage of the route with spectacular views of the Sella massif. Following the famous “Trail of Legends,” the path climbs to Pisciadù Lake and continues onto the vast Sella plateau. The barren, majestic landscape feels almost otherworldly. The descent through Val Lasties, with its waterfalls, leads down to Passo Sella. A challenging section for those with a ‘head for heights’, walk time 6hrs 30. Alternative easier routes available.
Stage 4: Around Sassolungo
The fourth stage is dedicated to the symbol of Val Gardena: Sassolungo. Passing through the striking “Stone City,” the route follows the panoramic Friedrich-August path with views of Marmolada, the Rosengarten, and the Alpe di Siusi. Alternatively, hikers can take the more alpine Sassolungo col via the historic “coffin lift” route; 4-6hrs depending on route option.
Stage 5: Relaxed hiking on the Seiser Alm/Alpe di Siusi
The final stage shows the gentler side of the Dolomites. The Alpe di Siusi, Europe’s largest high-altitude alpine meadow, delights with vast pastures, traditional mountain huts, and breathtaking views of Sassolungo and Sciliar. Depending on fitness level, different options are available – from an easy scenic walk to a more demanding loop towards the Tierser Alpl in the Rosengarten area. Walking time options from 4hrs 30 to 7hrs 40.
