Rainbow Ski Area Shifts to Community-Led Model Following Record Low Snowfall

Rainbow Ski Area has announced a major strategic shift for the upcoming 2026 season, pivoting to a community-led, weekend-focused operating model to ensure its long-term survival. The decision follows three years of challenging conditions, culminating in a devastating 2025 season where the field saw just 29 cm of natural snowfall, leading to a total loss of the season.

A Strategy for Sustainability

The South Island ski field, located in Nelson Lakes National Park, will now operate primarily on Saturdays and Sundays. Mid-week openings may still occur on "good snow days" if enough volunteers are available to staff the lifts and facilities.

The new model relies on a small core of paid staff, including a full-time on-mountain Operations Manager, supplemented by a team of dedicated volunteers. Committee chair Ian Goldschmidt told The Press that while the field currently maintains a strong financial position, the transition is vital for sustainability.

"There were only so many years you could be at a loss for," Goldschmidt said. "We’re doing our very best with what we’ve got."

New Community-Driven Initiatives

To support this shift, Rainbow is introducing several initiatives designed to engage its club members and the local community:

  • Volunteer Rewards: Members can volunteer to help run the field in exchange for skiing. For every four hours of work, volunteers earn one credit, which is redeemable for a free day of lift access.

  • Member Perks: The ski area is placing a renewed emphasis on its club identity, offering significant discounts and access to on-mountain accommodation for members.

  • Asset Care: Qualified club members will take direct responsibility for specific assets, such as grooming equipment and snowmaking systems, to maintain local knowledge and infrastructure.

Changes to Visitor Services

While the mountain remains open to the general public and Chill Pass holders, visitors will notice several changes to on-mountain services during the 2026 season:

  • Instruction and Programs: Formal ski lessons have been temporarily suspended, and there will be no scheduled schools program this year, though private groups are still welcome to book open days.

  • Café and Amenities: The on-mountain café will offer a simplified, more efficient menu.

  • Snowmaking: Snowmaking will be used selectively when conditions and volunteer staffing levels make it most effective.

The 2026 season at Rainbow is currently projected to run from August 2 to September 6, totaling approximately 62 operating days. Goldschmidt emphasized that while safety remains the top priority, visitors are encouraged to respect the efforts of the volunteers working to keep the lifts turning for the community.
