Outdoor Research Names Industry Veteran Scott Kerslake as Acting President

Outdoor Research (OR), the renowned Seattle-based technical apparel and gear manufacturer, has appointed Scott Kerslake as its acting president, effective May 11, 2026.

The move comes after the departure of Roger Barton, who stepped down in April following an eight-year tenure with the company. Barton served as president for the last six years, guiding the brand through a period of significant evolution in the outdoor retail landscape.

A Pedigree of Outdoor Leadership

Kerslake joins Outdoor Research with nearly 30 years of experience in the active and outdoor apparel sectors. He is widely recognized for his ability to scale purpose-driven brands:

  • Athleta: As the founder, Kerslake built the brand from the ground up, establishing it as a powerhouse in women’s activewear before its eventual acquisition by Gap Inc.

  • prAna: Serving as CEO, he oversaw a phase of rapid growth while cementing the brand’s reputation as a global leader in sustainable manufacturing.

  • Executive Track Record: His previous leadership roles include stints at Nixon and Mountain Hardwear, giving him a comprehensive view of both technical performance gear and lifestyle markets.

Steering the Interim Strategy

The board of directors is currently conducting a formal search for a permanent president. In the interim, Kerslake is tasked with maintaining the brand’s momentum. His focus will center on:

  • Advancing Product Strategy: Continuing the development of OR’s technical gear and apparel lines.

  • Organizational Collaboration: Strengthening internal ties to ensure seamless operations during the transition.

  • Strategic Execution: Supporting the brand’s long-term roadmap to ensure no loss of pace in a competitive market.

The Barton Legacy

Roger Barton’s exit marks the end of a pivotal chapter for Outdoor Research. Joining the company in 2018 to lead finance and operations, he took the helm as president in 2020. Under his leadership, the brand navigated the complexities of the mid-2020s outdoor boom and expanded its retail footprint.

Upon his departure last month, Barton expressed a high degree of optimism for the company's future, stating he was "confident in the team’s ability to continue growing the brand" and building on its technical heritage.

With Kerslake at the wheel starting next week, Outdoor Research appears poised to leverage its "Seattle-born" grit with a fresh, seasoned perspective on the global outdoor market.
