Upper Austria commissions cable car holding company to conduct takeover talks for Kasberg mountain
12/March/2026
Kasberg is a traditional family ski resort with around 100,000 day visitors annually. However, the resort now faces a structural turning point: without a viable new solution, it risks closure after this season. The past few years have been extremely challenging economically – despite millions in subsidies from the state of Upper Austria. The state is therefore taking a concrete step to secure the resort's future: the Upper Austrian cable car holding company has been tasked with initiating talks with the current operators regarding a possible takeover. The goal is to ensure an attractive offering at Kasberg in the future, particularly for children, families, and ski clubs.
Governor Thomas Stelzer emphasizes the special importance of the ski resort:
“ The Kasberg is a central component of Upper Austria’s ski landscape. We know the role it plays for the people in the region. Above all, it is an important ski area for children and families, where many Upper Austrians make their first turns on skis and where clubs train. If we want future generations to be able to learn to ski, we need attractive and easily accessible options within our own state. That’s why we stand united for a sustainable future for the Kasberg. ”
A crucial factor for the future viability of the ski resort is its technical infrastructure. This includes, in particular, snowmaking. However, such measures can only be implemented with the agreement of the affected landowners and with the necessary legal approvals. EU state aid regulations will also be examined.
Deputy Governor Manfred Haimbuchner stated:
“ We are taking responsibility for the Kasberg because we know what this location means for the region. The Kasberg is far more than just a ski resort. It is an economic engine, a source of identity, and a place where generations of families have made their fondest winter memories. When we talk about investments in tourism infrastructure, we are always also talking about jobs, added value, and opportunities for the local people. That is precisely why it was important for us to send a strong signal here. We stand behind rural areas, we stand behind our leading businesses, and we stand behind sustainable development. The Kasberg has a future as a modern and family-friendly winter sports destination with clear regional ties. ”
Markus Achleitner, the Upper Austrian Minister for Economic Affairs and Tourism, emphasizes:
“ Commissioning the Upper Austrian Cable Car Holding Company to begin takeover negotiations with the current operators of the Kasberg ski resort is a first, necessary step. This establishes the fundamental decision to continue operating the ski area. Integration into the Cable Car Holding Company's structure will enable professional management and leverage synergies. This will ensure that a regional winter sports offering will continue to be available at Kasberg, particularly for families with children and ski clubs. This will also provide important tourism and economic impetus for the entire Almtal region .”
