Twinliner Samnaun: new cabins and control system upgrade

The Twinliner in Samnaun is a defining project for Garaventa AG. As the first double-decker aerial tramway in 1995, the system set a milestone in cable car construction.

In the summer of 2026, the existing system will undergo a comprehensive modernization. This will involve replacing both cabins with new cabins from CWA Constructions SA, renewing the cable car control system, and upgrading the automatic platform screen doors to the latest technology.

In addition, the system will be designed for operation with unattended cabins. To this end, the cabins and stations will be technically and infrastructurally adapted. During the summer months, the L2 cable car will remain in operation, ensuring transport for guests and locals. The recommissioning of the modernized Twinliner is planned in time for the start of the 2026/27 winter season.

The cable car construction work has already begun. Recently the existing cabins were also removed.

ck in 1994, Ischgl/Samnaun was already setting trends in terms of state-of-the-art cable car technology. Until today, the Twinliner Samnaun L1 remains among the most innovative cable cars of the Alps. The cable car from Samnaun-Dorf to Silvretta Arena was the world’s first double-decker cable car. Just like back then, it still offers passengers exquisite views of the surrounding mountains throughout the year.

Up to 180 passengers per cabin get to enjoy a scenic six-minute ride up to Alp-Trida-Sattel in Samnaun in Switzerland. The Twinliner aerial tramway travels at speeds of up to ten metres per second, powered by an engine with around 2,000 HP.

The double-decker aerial tramway is a real eye-catcher. Here are some facts about the cable car:

• The mountain station is located at 2,511 metres above sea level.

• The cable car covers a total distance of 2,269 metres and an altitude difference of 722 metres.

• The aerial tramway L1 moves up to 1,620 passengers per hour.
