Snowsport England Launches Second Cohort Of Transformational ‘Sheleads’ Programme To Empower Female Coaches
02/June/2026
Snowsport England has officially opened applications for the second intake of its groundbreaking SheLeads initiative, a targeted programme designed to break down barriers for women in snowsports coaching and instruction. Following a highly successful inaugural pilot, the national governing body is expanding the initiative to further tackle gender disparity and boost the visibility of female role models across the sport.
The decision to launch SheLeads stems from critical industry research conducted in partnership with Loughborough University. The study laid bare the systemic challenges women face in the winter sports sector, specifically highlighting limited access to mentoring and significant barriers to progressing through coaching qualifications.
By providing structured support, dedicated mentoring, and fully funded development pathways, SheLeads directly confronts these hurdles, carving out a clearer path for women to enter and thrive in leadership positions.
A Transformational First Chapter
The debut SheLeads cohort united 12 women, ranging in age from 16 to 55, capturing a vibrant cross-section of the English snowsports landscape. The group bridged the gap between grassroots enthusiasts and elite-level athletes, including former Olympians.
Participants have hailed the programme as life-changing, offering not just technical advancement but a crucial emotional support network in a traditionally male-dominated field.
"My mentor has helped me to overcome my imposter syndrome. She builds confidence in my own skiing and is my biggest cheerleader. She’s more than a mentor – she’s become a friend."
— GA, SheLeads Graduate
"It’s nice to hear that I am not the only one struggling in a male-dominated environment, especially at FIS level. Hearing that others have the same struggles normalises it, and I now have a safe space to chat."
— SM, SheLeads Graduate
The tangible impact of the programme is already being felt on the slopes. The majority of the first cohort have successfully secured a diverse array of new qualifications, including Level 1 Instructor certifications, Park & Pipe Level 2, roller ski instructor qualifications, and advanced Level 3 alpine coaching awards.
What’s Next: SheLeads Cohort Two
Building on this momentum, Snowsport England is now offering 10 exclusive places for its second intake. Recognising the need for sustainable growth, the governing body has extended the programme to a 24-month period starting this autumn, giving candidates ample time for long-term development and deeper mentorship.
