S&E – SlopeExperts: Professional slope preparation at the Schilthorn. modular driver training sustainably improves quality, safety, efficiency
08/June/2026
In the 2025/26 winter season, Schilthornbahn AG (Switzerland) implemented a comprehensive, season-long training program for its snow groomer operators. In three consecutive modules – pre-season, peak season, and post-season – topics such as slope quality, efficient snow placement, safe operation of winch machines, and modern grooming techniques were taught in a practical manner. This article demonstrates how professional operator training can sustainably improve slope quality, reduce safety risks, and increase efficiency in daily ski resort operations.
Perfect slopes don't happen by chance. Behind high-quality and safe ski slopes are experienced drivers, efficient processes, and a deep understanding of snow, terrain, and machinery. It was precisely for this reason that Schilthornbahn AG opted for a comprehensive, multi-module training program for the initial and advanced training of its snow groomer operators in the 2025/26 winter season. The three consecutive modules accompanied the driver team throughout the entire season – from the pre-season through the peak season and into the post-season.
The aim of the project was to sustainably improve slope quality, increase safety standards, reduce machine wear and tear, and at the same time create more efficient workflows in daily operations.
Module 1: Pre-season – The foundation for a successful winter season
The first training module took place at the end of November 2025 under ideal weather and snow conditions. In addition to theoretical instruction, the drivers received intensive on-site support directly on the slopes. Topics covered included the correct handling of low snow levels, optimal snow placement, efficient winch operation, and safety-related driving techniques.
The focus was primarily on practical topics:
• Creating stable slope profiles with a thin snowpack
• Efficient distribution of artificial snow
• Avoiding unnecessary empty runs
• Machine-friendly operation and reduced ground pressure
• Correct blade handling and milling settings
• Safe operation on steep and critical terrain . The first module
already Module 2: Peak Season – Efficiency and Safety Under Real-World Conditions
During the peak season, the focus shifted to daily slope preparation under heavy load and time pressure. The goal was to further optimize workflows and maintain consistently high slope quality even under demanding conditions.
Training included:
• Optimizing milling machine settings and blade guidance
• Precise track overlap
• Efficient fresh snow preparation
• Time management and avoiding time-wasters
• Safe operation of winch machines
• Precise preparation in steep or narrow slope areas.
The importance of consistent safety standards in daily operations was particularly strikingly demonstrated by an incident during training: On January 27, 2026, a cable broke on a winch machine during work in the Blattwang area. Analysis revealed that the damage had likely been foreshadowed by individual wire breaks.
Especially in the high alpine terrain around the Schilthorn, such an incident can have serious consequences. On exposed sections of the slopes, a failure of the winch cable poses a real risk of the vehicle sliding uncontrollably – with potentially very dangerous consequences for the driver and infrastructure.
The incident vividly demonstrated that professional slope preparation goes far beyond mere skiing technique. Regular inspections, technical expertise, and clearly defined safety procedures are essential components of modern slope management.
Module 3: Off-season – Sustainable development and team culture
The third training module in March 2026 clearly demonstrated the significant progress the driver team had made throughout the season. Almost all drivers showed marked improvement in their work methods and their handling of machinery and snow.
Key areas of focus
during the post-season included:
• Working in slushy snow and soft conditions
• Optimal slope quality in spring
• Efficient operation in challenging snow conditions
• Maintenance and preparation of vehicles for summer storage
• Sustainable application of previously learned skills .
The increasing exchange of knowledge within the team was particularly At the same time, the training also highlighted the importance of clear leadership structures and continuous support in daily operations. Therefore, specific recommendations were made for the upcoming season – including the introduction of responsible "driver managers" for individual areas and regular short training sessions directly during operations.
The project at Schilthornbahn AG impressively demonstrates the added value that a professional and continuous training program can create for ski resorts:
• Higher and more consistent slope quality
• Increased safety for operators and guests
• Reduced machine wear and tear and lower operating costs
• More efficient workflows and better resource utilization
• Sustainable development of the entire operator team
• Improved communication and collaboration
The modular structure throughout the entire winter season proved to be a crucial success factor. Content could be repeated, reinforced, and directly tested under real-world conditions. This resulted not in a one-off seminar, but in a genuine development process within the entire team.
The demands placed on modern ski resorts are constantly increasing – as are guests' expectations for perfect slopes and safe operations. At the same time, snow, time, and resources are becoming ever more valuable.
"If your ski resort also wants to sustainably improve the quality of the slopes, reduce safety risks and increase the efficiency of your slope preparation, a structured, practical training program throughout the entire season is worthwhile."
"We would be happy to support you in developing a training concept that is individually tailored to your ski resort, your drivers and your technical requirements – practice-oriented, sustainable and directly in the real field of operation.
