Levi launching a summer-long treasure hunt with an extraordinary bounty: a real gold nugget valued at €20,000

Ski resorts are famous for their winter powder, but one Arctic destination is giving travelers a shiny new reason to visit during the warmer months.
Starting June 18, 2026, the Finnish ski resort of Levi is launching a summer-long treasure hunt with an extraordinary bounty: a real gold nugget valued at €20,000 (approximately $23,000).
Dubbed the "Midnight Sun Hunt," the adventure will kick off at the Levi Visitor Center. From there, treasure hunters will be guided through the resort's expansive trails, local landmarks, and community services in search of the prize.
A Summer-Long Arctic Adventure
The event’s name is a nod to Levi’s unique geography. Perched just inside the Arctic Circle, the region experiences exceptionally long days during the summer months when the sun famously never sets. Resort officials hope the golden incentive will encourage tourists to explore the area's vibrant off-season landscape.
"Levi is known above all for its winter, but the northern summer is still undiscovered by many. We want to give travelers a new reason to visit Levi when the sun never sets, and the fell landscape reveals a completely different side of itself." said Satu Pesonen, CEO of Visit Levi
How the Hunt Works
Finding the gold will require a mix of exploration and strategy:
The Clue Trail: Participants will follow a series of clues and leads scattered across the resort.
Increasing Odds: While the gold can technically be found after uncovering any single clue, each subsequent hint released throughout the season will make the final location much easier to pinpoint.
The Timeline: Organizers plan to drop the final hint on August 22, 2026, ensuring the hunt lasts all summer—unless a clever seeker manages to crack the code and claim the treasure early.
No Shovels Required
The high-stakes event is being organized in collaboration with Agnico Eagle Finland, a subsidiary of the Canadian gold-mining giant Agnico Eagle Mines.
Despite the nature of the prize, organizers are stressing that participants can leave their heavy machinery and digging tools at home. Finding the gold will not require disturbing the terrain or excavating the earth.
Searchers are strictly asked to remain within permitted areas, show respect for the local environment, and practice responsible outdoor ethics while exploring the mountain.
