Born on a Chairlift, Built for the Wild: How Peak Performance and Polartec Are Redefining Freeride Apparel
11/June/2026
Great ideas rarely begin in a corporate boardroom. For the Swedish mountain brand Peak Performance, inception occurred in 1986 on a freezing chairlift in Åre, Sweden. Two longtime friends, frustrated by the yawning gap between the bulky, uninspired ski gear available on the market and what they actually needed to survive and enjoy the elements, came to a sudden realization: if no one else was going to build apparel that balanced high-level technical performance with clean, effortless style, they would have to do it themselves.
Four decades later, that rebellious, freeride spirit remains the heartbeat of the brand. But keeping pace with the demands of modern athletes requires more than just a great philosophy—it requires cutting-edge material science. Enter Polartec®, the legendary pioneer of performance fleece and insulation fabrics.
As part of its ongoing Beyond Stories series, Polartec recently went behind the scenes with Peak Performance’s design team to explore how this powerhouse partnership continuously bridges the gap between raw concept and mountain reality.
“We've crafted our product portfolio around what inspires us most—from finding the right design and deploying the right technical solutions to enhancing it to fit the needs of our athletes,” says the Peak Performance Design Team. “Polartec is a valued partner in that, delivering the highest level of performance while supporting our mission to bring the freeride spirit to the world.”
The Rhythm of the Mountain
Unlike traditional fashion houses that design around rigid seasonal schedules and studio sketches, the Peak Performance team works in a continuous, iterative loop. Ideas are born directly on the mountain, tested rigorously in motion, and brought back to the workshop to be sharpened.
This hands-on approach mirrors a distinctly Swedish design ethos: a delicate harmony where clean aesthetics, functional longevity, and progressive innovation sit side-by-side. The goal is to create apparel that never feels overworked or overbuilt. Every zipper, seam, and fabric panel serves a specific purpose. The design philosophy is simple: when you are pushing your physical limits on a steep descent, a grueling alpine hike, or a fast-paced trail run, the last thing you should be worrying about is your gear.
Trust in the Tech
To achieve this seamless experience, fabric selection is everything. Peak Performance relies on advanced materials to fine-tune the critical trifecta of outdoor apparel: breathability, warmth, and weight. But according to the designers, raw technical specifications tell only half the story.
"Performance metrics alone mean very little," the team explains. It is also about tactile reality—how a garment feels, how it fluidly moves with the body, and how it instills confidence in demanding conditions.
For Erik Stensson, Design Manager at Peak Performance, this philosophy bridges the gap between his personal life and professional output. An avid alpine skier and runner, Stensson splits his time across rapidly changing seasons and conditions—a rhythm that directly informs his design choices.
"I end up going back to the same pieces because they work across seasons and can be worn on their own or layered depending on what the day demands, like my Freelight Polartec Alpha Hood," Stensson notes. "It's a question of trust, and when trust is there, you have the freedom to focus on everything else."
The Next Evolution: The Freelight Polartec Alpha Hood
The exact embodiment of Stensson’s trust-driven philosophy is arriving for Spring/Summer '26. Peak Performance has unveiled the latest addition to its technical lineup: the Freelight Polartec Alpha Hood (available for both men and women). This super-lightweight hooded jacket represents a massive breakthrough in active insulation, weighing a mere 200g
A multi-activity hooded insulating jacket engineered to regulate heat, eliminate moisture, and dry in no time at all.
Made from POLARTEC ALPHA KNIT FABRIC, a material that uses lofted fibre technology and a mesh core to promote the retention of warm air, or enhanced airflow, depending on the conditions.
POLARTEC ALPHA KNIT has hydrophobic properties, allowing it to actively repel moisture and dry quickly. It also fights moisture build-up, maintaining insulation in even damp conditions.
The Hood is cut with raglan sleeves, allowing for a greater range of movement, and its flatlock covering seams offer a frictionless wearing experience. The high neckline combats windchill, and the fitted hood is comfortable without being bulky.
The Freelight Polartec Alpha Hood is super lightweight, just 200g (85gsm), and highly compressible, with no damage to insulation, making it perfect for stuffing in a bag, or even a pocket.
The Hood features reflective zip-pullers and a zipped chest pocket for small items.
What makes this layer unique is its ability to serve as a standalone, single layer all day long. It completely eliminates the tedious necessity of stopping to add or shed layers when transitioning between different outdoor environments or experiencing sudden spikes in body heat.
The technical engineering behind the jacket utilizes Polartec Alpha knit fabric, a specialized material that relies on advanced lofted fiber technology woven around a mesh core. The science is highly adaptive:
Smart Thermoregulation: The mesh structure traps warm air to preserve core body temperature when you are stationary, yet immediately opens up to promote enhanced airflow and release heat the moment you start moving.
Hydrophobic Moisture Control: The knit construction is inherently hydrophobic, actively repelling external moisture and fighting interior sweat build-up. Even in damp, grueling alpine conditions, the jacket refuses to wet out, maintaining its insulation capabilities and drying in record time.
Tailored for Motion
True to the brand's Swedish design roots, the physical silhouette of the Freelight Alpha Hood is strictly performance-oriented. The jacket is cut with ergonomic raglan sleeves to guarantee a completely uninhibited, fluid range of motion whether you are gripping ski poles or climbing in the saddle. Every internal seam is finished with flatlock stitching to provide a smooth, entirely frictionless wearing experience against skin or baselayers.
Up top, a high neckline directly combats sudden windchill, pairing seamlessly with a streamlined, fitted hood that seals out the elements without adding bulky distraction. For added utility on late-evening trails, the jacket includes reflective zip-pullers alongside a secure, zipped chest pocket designed to store small, essential items. When the sun finally breaks through, the highly compressible fabric allows the entire garment to be stuffed down into a backpack or an open pocket without risking any structural damage to the insulation fibers.
Community-Driven Evolution
This feedback loop extends far beyond the design studio. Peak Performance has cultivated a global community of explorers, skiers, and athletes who constantly push boundaries. Their real-world, authentic feedback acts as the ultimate testing ground, feeding directly back into the product development cycle.
As outdoor disciplines evolve and boundaries blur between skiing, hiking, and everyday trail movement, the partnership between Peak Performance and Polartec shows no signs of slowing down. By prioritizing real experience over corporate assumptions, they ensure their gear is ready for whatever comes next. After all, progress—much like the mountains themselves—is never static.
