HolidayTrex reports on The 30 Alpine regions with the best value for money in summer 2026
16/July/2026
What are the key factors when choosing the perfect Alpine region for your summer holiday? This is a question many active holidaymakers ask themselves every year. When they travel to the mountains, they don't just want a perfect view of the majestic peaks, but also exciting activities and excursions, or first-class dining. HolidayTrex presents a comprehensive ranking of the 30 Alpine regions offering the best value for money for summer 2026.
A summer holiday in the Alps offers much more than just hiking with panoramic mountain views. For active holidaymakers, the perfect break in the mountains is always a blend of experiencing nature, being active, relaxing, and enjoying the local cuisine. HolidayTrex's comprehensive ranking therefore takes into account all the factors that are important for a successful summer holiday in the Alps: the altitude of the mountains, the number of long-distance hiking trails and lakes, the prices of hotels and holiday apartments, as well as daily expenses for cable car tickets, lunch, and a beer at a mountain hut.
The ranking also incorporates factors such as restaurant ratings and social media popularity. Depending on what outdoor enthusiasts in the Alps prefer, the ranking can be displayed either overall or with a focus on individual categories such as "Outdoor & Activity," "Accommodation," "Daily Spending," and "Popularity."
The top destination in Austria leads the ranking: The Zillertal is the favorite for the 2026 travel season.
In summer 2026, Austria's Zillertal Valley is the undisputed favorite. With the best overall score, this Alpine region in Tyrol demonstrates its premium status. The Zillertal achieves top-half rankings in all four main categories of the HolidayTrex ranking. Thus, it's not individual top ratings, but the consistent scoring across all areas that ultimately catapults the Zillertal to first place. Its top rankings for value for money speak for themselves.
The average price for a one-week stay in a holiday apartment in the Zillertal Valley is €1,240 for two adults (€1,720 for a family with two children). Another advantage, especially from a financial perspective, is the price of food. When you pay an average of €6.30 for a 0.5-liter beer and €16.70 for lunch in the mountain huts, nestled in the shadow of the Hochfeiler (3,509 m), it's a significant difference. This makes the Zillertal Valley a definite highlight of the travel season.
Outdoor activities, mountain air and refreshing dips: The highlights at a glance
The number one destination in the HolidayTrex ranking is a true dream for every active holidaymaker! But what exactly makes an Alpine region a top destination for guests? The following categories offer both ambitious outdoor enthusiasts and relaxed hikers in-depth insights and important data for planning an unforgettable holiday in Europe's largest high mountain range.
Plenty of altitude: Switzerland offers the best mountain air.
Those who travel to the Alps during the warmer months do so to escape the sweltering summer days and enjoy the mild temperatures of the mountains. The higher the peaks, the cooler the mountain air becomes. This is appreciated not only by active vacationers seeking high altitudes, but also by anyone who values the clean, fresh air for health reasons.
Here, Switzerland, with its breathtaking mountain panoramas and dozens of four-thousand-meter peaks, offers a truly exceptional alpine setting. It's an experience that certainly comes at a price, but is rewarded with unparalleled moments in the high mountains. And so, the highest peak in Switzerland, the 4,545-meter-high Dom, is also listed in the current HolidayTrex ranking, located in the Saas Valley region of the canton of Valais. In second place is another Swiss Alpine region with a mountain over 4,000 meters high: the Jungfrau region with the Finsteraarhorn (4,274 m).
The mountaineering village in the Ötztal valley is the number 1 highest place.
However, it doesn't always have to be the highest peaks when it comes to altitude, as many holiday resorts in the Alps are also located well above 1,500 m. In the HolidayTrex ranking, Vent in the Ötztal valley receives the highest score because the center of this small mountaineering village lies at an altitude of 1,895 m!
Just under 45 meters lower, Compatsch Compaccio (1,850 m) is the highest village in the Seiser Alm region. And in the final remaining podium position in this ranking category, two more villages, both at 1,800 m, await: Saas-Fee in the Saas Valley and Avoriaz in the Portes du Soleil region of France. In contrast, Grindelwald (1,034 m) in the Jungfrau Region boasts the greatest difference in altitude, a full 3,240 m, to the region's highest peak (Finsteraarhorn, 4,274 m).
The Three Peaks Dolomites region as a great hiking paradise
When active holidaymakers travel to the Alps in spring, summer, or autumn, they are primarily looking for suitable hiking trails. In the HolidayTrex ranking, the Three Peaks Dolomites region takes first place in the category of most long-distance hiking trails. This is because eight long-distance trails lead through the heart of the UNESCO World Heritage Site. These include four of the ten Dolomite High Routes (Nos. 1, 3, 4, and 5), as well as the Carnic High Route (156 km) and the Peace Trail "Sentiero della Pace" (500 km).
The Schladming-Dachstein Alpine region comes in second place. It's hard to miss, as it boasts seven long-distance hiking trails. One trail leads up to 2,995 meters to the summit of the Hoher Dachstein. Others, such as the Northern Alpine Trail (1,040 km), the Dachstein Circular Trail (137 km), and the Hemma Pilgrimage Trail (800 km), offer ample opportunity for extended multi-day hikes or relaxed day hikes. Third place in terms of hiking trails is shared by three regions: the Wipptal and Paganella valleys (both in Italy), and the Ötztal valley (Austria), each traversed by six long-distance trails.
Pure cooling relief on hot summer days: The greatest variety of lakes
In the Alps, it's not just the pleasant climate that provides refreshment on hot summer days, but also the clear mountain water. The HolidayTrex ranking therefore focuses on the regions with the most lakes. In first place in this category is Montafon in Vorarlberg, with no fewer than 29 large and small mountain lakes.
Many lakes can also be found in the Campiglio region (Italy) with 28, as well as in the Wipptal and Ötztal valleys with 27 bodies of water each, all of which impress with scenic beauty and welcome refreshment.
But beware! Not every lake in Europe's largest high mountain range is suitable for swimming. Swimming is prohibited in Lago di Carezza, for example, one of Italy's most beautiful mountain lakes. It lies within a nature reserve in South Tyrol. This means that visitors should always check beforehand whether a lake in the respective Alpine region is actually open for swimming.
methodology
For this ranking, 30 popular regions in the Alps were selected, all of which have enjoyed a good reputation among active holidaymakers for years. They appreciate not only the breathtaking mountain panoramas but also the complete package of adventure, comfort, and fun on the peaks and in the valleys. Therefore, HolidayTrex considers a wide range of factors in the categories of "Outdoor & Activity," "Accommodation," "Daily Expenses," and "Popularity" when selecting the best Alpine regions.
To allow for a fair comparison of the individual scores of all the Alpine regions examined, the results were normalized on a scale of 0 to 100. The region with the best or most affordable score in each category received 100 points, while the region with the worst or most expensive score received 0 points. All other regions were then measured against these extreme values in each category and thus ranked accordingly.
The data was collected in May 2026.
