Best Ski Resort 2026: Which top ski destinations in the Alps have the most satisfied guests?

Following an intensive winter season and over 41,000 guests interviewed directly on the slopes of the Alps (random method/guided self-administered questionnaire), the results of the largest on-mountain survey in the Alpine region are now available. Over a total of 248 days, 24 interviewers surveyed an average of 824 guests per destination in restaurants and mountain huts in top ski resorts in Austria, Switzerland, Italy, France, and Germany.

Why does this study set the pace for all of us in Alpine tourism? Real data: no online voting, but direct feedback from guests on site.

Hard facts: over 20 categories – from slope quality to value for money. Which destinations have the biggest "wow factor"? (i.e., which destinations exceed the expectations of skiers/snowboarders?) What do guests expect from the respective destinations in the future?

On June 24, 2026, the results of the study, now in its seventh iteration (2012/2014/2016/2018/2020/2023/2026), were presented at the MCI Innsbruck (Management Center). Trends for the coming years were discussed, and the top performers were recognized. The study has been overseen since its inception by Univ. Prof. Dr. Kurt Matzler of the University of Innsbruck.

Overall satisfaction ratings are now at 7.95 (scale 1-10). Generally speaking, both satisfaction ratings and value for money have recovered in comparable destinations. However, the peak values of 2018 have not yet been reached.

It's noticeable that the over-50 age group (and also the group that rates their skiing skills as good/very good) is growing. This could also be interpreted as a sign that we're lacking in new recruits. The issue of pricing is ever-present, and therefore also in our industry. So far, the not insignificant increases haven't had a very negative impact. However, there are already indications that we should proceed very cautiously here – especially with regard to families – if we don't want to lose customers. (See future topics!)

Managing excessive numbers of guests on the slopes also impacts safety. Data indicates that Austrian destinations, in particular, should implement appropriate guest management systems to a greater extent in the future, as high numbers of guests in the ski area have a very negative effect on overall satisfaction.

The big question is, when will the so-called "tipping point" be reached? Up to this point, people are still accepting the prices and the "occupancy level" without significantly changing their behavior. If such changes occur (i.e., a reduction in ski days, dropping out, etc.), things can very quickly tip in the wrong direction. Therefore, it is imperative to focus more on increasing the resort's attractiveness, something that was largely acknowledged in the reviews from guests last winter, although even some of the top 10 resorts didn't reach the same levels as in 2023.

It is somewhat surprising that for the first time French ski resorts are also among the top performers in the overall ranking and achieve very high levels of guest satisfaction.

“Go for excellence” should not only be understood as a slogan, but as an appeal to keep an eye on the challenges of the future – especially the use of AI in organizations to optimize internal processes or marketing/sales and communication – but also on the continuous development of the quality standard of the products and services offered.

The six most important decision criteria are currently:

1. Piste quality

2. Snow reliability

3. Piste safety

4. Ski area size/slope range

5. Friendliness

6. Transport comfort

What topics will occupy us most in the future?

  • VALUE FOR MONEY

  • SAFETY ON THE SLOPES

  • COMFORT OF LIFTS AND RAILWAYS

  • LIMITING THE NUMBER OF VISITORS

  • REAL-TIME INFORMATION ABOUT CONDITIONS IN THE SKI AREA

  • The category winners: Serfaus-Fiss-Ladis (children's/family offer), Laax (fun & snowboard parks), Ischgl (après ski) and Sulden (value for money), which have been at the top 7 times in a row.

Mountain Management extends its warmest congratulations to the winners!

The awards presented should continue to serve as an incentive to constantly work on "uniqueness" in order to not only satisfy guests on the mountain in the future, but to exceed their expectations, says the initiator of the study, Mike Partel.

With over 300,000 guests surveyed on the mountain since 2012, data/information of the highest relevance for further development is available and helps decisively to facilitate and accelerate decision-making processes or to act in a targeted manner.

The presentation of the data was enriched by very interesting lectures from Prof. Siller/MCI and Univ.-Prof. Matzler/UNI Innsbruck as well as the expert panel with Bruno Felicetti/Madonna di Campiglio, Patricio Hetfleisch/Tirol Werbung, Gilberto Loacker/Smart Company Coach.
