US Skier Visits to Alps Hit Record Highs as Price Gap with North America Widens

Both tour operator bookings and official tourism data from Europe's major Alpine nations confirms record-breaking growth in American skier visits during previous winter, with the trend accelerating into the current 2026 season.

The Swiss Federal Statistical Office reported 18.5 million total overnight stays for winter 2024-25, up 2.8% year-on-year, with American visitors driving the largest national increase. US tourists contributed 1.7 million overnight stays from the Americas region, representing 13.4% growth.

Statistics Austria recorded 973,000 US overnight stays in winter destinations, up 15.4% from 843,000 the previous season—an all-time record. Tobias Thomas, Director General of Statistics Austria, noted: "This positive balance, achieved in the face of significant external pressures, underscores the robustness of Austria's winter tourism sector."

Domaines Skiables de France reported 54.8 million total skier visits (+5.5%), with American visitors up 10.6%. Canadian visitors surged 21.3%, attributed partly to political tensions affecting US-Canada travel patterns.

Tour Operator Data Confirms Tourism Office Claims

UK-based SNO Ski Holidays reports a 31% year-on-year increase in American customer enquiries for Alpine ski holidays this season. The company has identified a subset of US customers routing through London to access competitively-priced UK package holidays before transferring to Alpine resorts.

"Some American guests fly into London first, combining a weekend of sightseeing with the convenience of departing on one of the hundreds of weekly charter flights to Alpine resorts," the company reports. "This is a package deal that doesn't exist when flying direct from the United States."

Price Differential Analysis

SNO Ski's research is backed by customers citing the lift ticket price gap, as the biggest reason for transatlantic bookings:

US Resort
Daily Price
European Resort
Daily Price
Deer Valley
$366
St Anton
€85 (~$100)
Vail
$322
Les 3 Vallées
€86 (~$101)
Park City
$302
Courchevel
€91 (~$107)

CEO Richard Sinclair says the explanation lies in market concentration with “much fewer ski resorts in the USA, meaning there are so many more skiers per resort than in Europe." According to Laurent Vanat's International Report on Snow & Mountain Tourism, Europe operates approximately 4,000 ski resorts serving 448 million people, while the US has roughly 500 resorts for 332 million population - creating eight times more resort options per capita in Europe.

The Financial Times reports that Vail Resorts and Alterra Mountain Company now control nearly half of the North American ski market, creating significant pricing power.

Pass Integration Is Also Driving American Skier Interest In Europe

Multi-resort pass expansion has reduced barriers to European skiing for US pass holders. Epic Pass (2025-26) now includes 34 European resorts; Ikon Pass covers 24 Alpine destinations.

Dolomiti Superski reported 12,350 Ikon Pass customers by mid-season 2024-25, a 30% year-on-year increase. Diego Clara, PR representative for the consortium, stated: "It looks like joining Ikon Pass was a great chance for Dolomiti Superski to conquer the hearts of North American skiers."

Switzerland Tourism reports approximately 50,000 Ikon-related skier-days at Zermatt in recent seasons, with US visitors now comprising roughly 20% of the resort's total, making America their second most important source market.

Capacity Constraints in US Market

Four of the five highest-visit seasons have occurred since the 2021 post-pandemic boom and Sinclair reports that capacity management measures at major US resorts may be contributing to European interest "Telluride added advance reservation for Epic Pass holders with access limited to seven days."

The Canadian Market Shift Adds Further Transatlantic Ski Travel

Political factors have influenced Canadian booking patterns. Isabelle Rapisarda, North American Customer Manager for Jungfrau Region Tourism, noted: "We are seeing renewed interest from Canadian visitors. Scarred by tensions between the two countries, they are avoiding destinations in the US in favour of Europe and Switzerland."

Outlook

Martin Nydegger, Director of Switzerland Tourism, summarised winter 2024-25 as "an amazing record" for American visitors. Laurent Vanat observed that the anticipated decline in Western skier numbers "did not really happen as expected, with ageing baby-boomers keeping on skiing"—but destination preferences are shifting towards Europe.

With US lift ticket prices continuing to rise and European resorts investing in infrastructure and North American marketing, the transatlantic trend may be set to continue.

Sinclair is bullish, “It’s terrific that our American ski buddies can come and ski with us on iconic alpine mountains for less than the price of a week skiing back home. We’ve loved skiing North America for decades and its great to invite our US skiers to visit over here in return."
