Garaventa Overhauls Rinerhorn, Their First Detachable Gondola Lift

Built in 1987, the Rinerhorn cable car  was the first detachable gondola lift from Garaventa and an important part of the Davos Klosters region. Over the last five years, the system has undergone extensive modernization in three phases.

Phase one involved the refurbishment of the mechanics and drive system. In phase two, the cabins were renewed. In the third phase, Sisag carried out a complete control system overhaul, thus paving the way for summer 2025.

Today, the modernized Rinerhorn cable car is operating reliably again in both summer and winter. With the completion of the work, Rinerhorn Mountain Railways AG has received the operating license and concession to continue operating the cable car until 2047. The comprehensive modernization guarantees a safe and reliable ride for the next twenty years.

Winter sports enthusiasts, families, hikers, and bikers will continue to be able to access the diverse offerings at Rinerhorn conveniently and sustainably. We are delighted to have accompanied this iconic facility on its journey into the next generation with various projects.

The Rinerhorn cable car takes about ten minutes from Glaris village to the summit. In fine weather, the view from here stretches as far as the historic Schatzalp.

On the other side of the valley, it's time to sit down and take a deep breath – after all, the around 3 km Rinerhorn toboggan run is considered one of the most challenging around, with exceptionally steep turns that demands great steering and braking skill. The run packs a punch from the very start, with a steep section including a tunnel. Once they've passed through this unscathed, sledgers will find the run becomes a little flatter as it winds its way steadily through the pine forest.

Further down, there are some more steep sections characterised by banked curves, which continue until the end of the run. Sledgers will be glad to know that there's a local bus to take them safely home, even late at night. What's more, they may well be happy to let someone else drive for once.
